Every monster in Monster Hunter is memorable, but the flagship ones leave the biggest impression. Here are the best.
One such optional quest in Wilds is called Werner’s Test Run, and completing it will unlock a highly valuable new battle mechanic called hunting assistants. If you need some helping figuring out where to find this quest, how to complete it, and what you get as a reward, read on for out complete guide to Werner’s Test Run.
How To Start Werner’s Test Run
Werner’s Test Run is a High Rank quest that you won’t have access to until you’ve finished the main campaign and rolled credits on Low Rank. What’s more, you won’t have access to the map where Werner is located, Ruins of Wyveria, at first. You’ll need to progress through several missions in Chapter 5 before you’ll be allowed to return to the Guardian-infested ruins of the Wyverians.
Once you’re able to return to Wyveria, you’ll find Warner with a quest marker over his head at the base camp. Talk to him to learn about his latest invention, then head over to the quest counter (Alma) and accept the mission Werner’s Test Run in the Optional Quests tab. Restock your potions, upgrade your equipment, and get ready for a heck of a hunt.
How To Complete Werner’s Test Run
This mission is a simple Guardian Doshaguma in Wyveria with one interesting twist. Werner is waiting for you somewhere in Wyveria with his prototype, a multi-stage explosion, and he wants you to help him test it out on the Guardian Doshaguma.
To do this, simply lure the monster over to where Werner is waiting. You can do this by attacking the monster and then running to Werner, or by firing a lure pod at the monster to ensure you keep its attention. When you get to Warner, he will pick up his bomb and carry it into the middle of the battlefield. Now’s your chance to play with your new toy.
If you’re having trouble finding Werner, his map icon is a little guy standing next to a barrel bomb.
Werner’s multi-stage explosion is a prototype barrel bomb that can be detonated multiple times, increasing in power over time until it eventually lets off one last giant explosion.
There are a few different ways to trigger the bomb. You can bait the monster into attacking it by standing close to the barrel bomb and dodging out of the way when it attacks. You can fire slinger ammo at it when the monster gets near it and it will also detonate that way.
If you’re using a ranged weapon like a bow or bowgun, you should have a pretty easy time targeting the barrel whenever the Guardian Doshaguma is near it.
Technically you only have to hunt the Guardian Doshaguma to complete this side quest, but it’s a good time to practice using the multi-stage explosion too.
The key is to hit the Doshaguma with as many small explosions as possible because every small hit increases the potency of the final big explosion. This bomb has incredibly high damage potential if you use it correctly.
Once the Doshaguma has been slain, the quest is complete and you will unlock Werner as a hunting assistant. Now when you hunt in Wysteria you will occasionally find Werner and his multi-stage explosive in the field. You can utilize it the same way you did in this side quest any time Werner is around, and you can check if he’s there by reading the Environment Overview on your map.
