Known among JRPG fans as a legendary Wii U-exclusive title for nearly a decade, Xenoblade Chronicles X is finally getting the chance to appear on other platforms, as part of the continuing wave of Wii U games ported to the Switch. Though not a direct part of the Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy, Xenoblade Chronicles X became notable among fans for its more sci-fi-influenced narrative and aesthetic, harkening back to other Monolith Soft-developed titles like the Xenosaga trilogy and before it, Xenogears.

The upcoming Switch port of Xenoblade Chronicles X will likely make some significant changes if other ports of Wii U titles are any indication.

When Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition launches on the Switch on March 20, 2025, players will finally have a chance to play the game on a more popular platform, and with a few enhancements thrown in to boot. To promote the release, Nintendo released a substantial new Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition overview trailer, detailing the game’s systems for newcomers. The trailer also had a teaser for some of the additional story content, which seems to take place after the conclusion of the original campaign, expanding on key questions from the Wii U version. Updates to the official Japanese website expanded further on the teases.

The following details contain spoilers for the main campaign of Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Trailer Details New Story Content

Narrated by the voice of Elma, one of the main companions available to accompany the protagonist, the overview trailer shows off the Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition upgrades, which include enhanced visuals, a new playable mecha, and new playable companions like Qlurian Neilnail, and Liesel, a test pilot who was revealed in a Nintendo promotional post to be involved with the development of the new Skell model, Hraesvelg. Additional story details posted on the official Japanese website for Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition refer to a mysterious incident in which huge swathes of Mira seemingly disappear into an unknown void. A new enemy faction known as the Ghosts emerges from the voids, attacking the members of BLADE.

Roughly translated from Japanese, the description reads:

“Following the climactic battle within the Lifehold Core, an unknown “Vanishing Event” occurs all over Mira. It takes the form of an expanding void that swallows everything, even light. What’s more, a new enemy, the ‘Ghosts’ emerges from the void, attacking the BLADE members. With the protagonist and company in desperation, a Skell descends: Areas, the machine that defended the White Whale from the enemy as it crashed on Mira. Thought missing along with its pilot, Ares joins the group to face down the new threat. Between the Vanishing Event, the Ghosts, the Ganglion remains, and a floating continent hovering above Mira, BLADE must work to once again secure humanity’s safety in an unknown new land.”

The website updates also reveal that the Ares has returned to action. In the prologue of the Xenoblade Chronicles X main plot, Ares was a Skell that helped defend the White Whale colony ship from an alien assault, safeguarding the colonists as the ship crash-landed onto the surface of Mira. Players and their companions will be tackling the disappearances, the return of the Ares, the attack of the Ghosts, and even the remnants of the Ganglion antagonist faction, during the added story campaign, which takes place on a new floating continent.

With Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition just weeks away, Nintendo is ramping up its promotional efforts. Fans and newcomers will have much to look forward to as they await the game’s release.
