They gain special powers from an unknown entity, each person has a unique ability, and they even have special transformation sequences. The difference is that they don’t work together or fight for a greater cause. Each one is there for purely selfish reasons. It’s their greed that fuels their powers.

The characters in this manga fight using the powers embedded into their clothing, and they’re only defeated when they’re stripped bare. There’s a ton of nudity and revealing outfits in this manga, which is why it’s marketed toward adults.

This manga is pure violence and mainly consists of girls fighting each other using their unique abilities. There is little else to the plot other than that, but there are some cool combat scenes as a result. While there isn’t much depth to this story, it does change the perception of magical girls, who are usually a monolith of love and friendship.

Unfortunately, that girl was a delinquent with violent tendencies named Majiba Kayo.

This comedy truly paints magical girls in a different light, showing that not everyone is suited to be a savior of love and justice. Majiba is strong, violent, and short-tempered, and she doesn’t even need to transform to fight the monsters. She’s a battle-loving delinquent who relishes a good, firm punch. It’s not exactly the normal image of a magical girl.

Due to her past trauma, Kirari agrees and begins fighting phobias with her new powers to prevent more deaths.

Going by the title, this manga covers the heavy topic of suicide and portrays it often within the story. Not only that, but Kirari’s powers also use motifs and symbolism representing the act of suicide, which can be triggering for some people. Despite this, the story delivers an uplifting message about helping others while also including great magical girl action.

What makes Madoka★Magica great is the way it challenges the typical philosophy of magical girl content. Magical girl powers in this manga are part of a transaction, and to become magical, the girls must pay something. The story becomes much darker as the characters learn the true cost of their powers, resulting in an incredible reveal at the end. It may not be as exciting as the anime, but it’s still worth a read.

Prisma☆Illya 3rei!! is the latest part of the series, which covers Illya’s adventure in a parallel world. The Fate series has always been known for its use of dark concepts and ideas in its content, so despite its use of traditional magical girl elements, this manga has much more nuance than it appears. It makes for a blend of lighthearted and intense storytelling.
