This article contains spoilers for One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
Summary
- Many strong Roger Pirates are still alive in One Piece, like Rayleigh and Scopper Gaban.
- Roger Pirates choose not to help save the world, preferring retirement on Elbaf and Sabaody.
- The Roger Pirates believe their era has passed, making room for the next generation like the Straw Hats.
As the audience has learned quickly throughout the story of One Piece, while some of the crew is no longer alive, many of the Roger Pirates are still relevant parts of the series. Between Rayleigh, who trained Luffy during the time skip, and Scopper Gaban, who revealed himself to Luffy on the island of Elbaf, a fair amount of Roger’s extremely powerful crew still have plenty to do in the series overall. At least for the more important members of the crew in One Piece, it seems more Roger Pirates are alive than dead.
However, with the Roger Pirates still alive to this day, many fans have wondered; why don’t the Roger Pirates use their incredible strength to fix the world’s issues? Being some of the strongest characters One Piece fans have seen so far, it seems as if characters like Scopper Gaban or Rayleigh could have easily solved the issues that Luffy struggled heavily with. Still, there are a few probable reasons, and some fairly simple explanations, as to why these powerful pirates in One Piece refuse to help save the world.

There Are Plenty Of Strong Roger Pirates Left In One Piece
Rayleigh And Scopper Gaban Are Incredibly Strong
In One Piece, the Roger Pirates have always been looked at as the greatest heroes of the universe, inspiring countless pirates to follow in their footsteps. Plus, through reaching the island of Laugh Tale, the crew became one of the most legendary pirate groups in all of One Piece. However, although many view the pirate group as inherently good, things like the Roger Pirate’s execution of Squardo’s crew or their views on flippantly attacking those who insult them, are signs that the Roger Pirates may be closer to neutral than good.
I am hereby disbanding the Roger Pirates! – Roger
However, at the same time, through their legendary status, characters like Roger, Rayleigh, and Scopper Gaban, the three strongest members of the Roger Pirates, have become ridiculously strong, reaching well beyond the status of any Emperor’s crew. As many have already seen, Rayleigh was able to hold his own against an Admiral, even in his old age. Additionally, One Piece’s Scopper Gaban himself is fairly comparable to Rayleigh, meaning he could probably fight on a similar level. With the entire crew reforming and adding characters like Shanks as well, the crew itself could probably deal with many threats to the One Piece world fairly easily.
The Roger Pirates Are Retired
They Don’t Want To Help Save The World
- The Roger Pirates Want To Relax
- There’s No Guarentee They’d Win Either
Still, despite this feeling like an easy solution to many of the problems in One Piece, there are a few reasons why the Roger Pirates have remained inactive. Mainly, characters like Scopper and Rayleigh are retired and living out their days peacefully on One Piece’s Elbaf Island and Sabaody respectively. The pirates rarely step in to solve any problems because they don’t want to, unless, of course, they are moved by a particularly inspirational pirate like Luffy.

Luffy’s Gear 4 transformations enhance his power, speed, and defense with Boundman, Tankman, and Snakeman—each suited for different battles.
At the same time, even with the crew reformed with all the living crew members returning, there is no guarantee that they would be able to get the upper hand on any of the Emperor’s crew in One Piece. Although a fight between a character like Rayleigh and Kaido is still fairly hard to see who would win, the lack of numbers in the remains of the Roger crew would make it nearly impossible for the remaining Roger Pirates to deal with a force like the Beast Pirates. Even with Shanks on the crew, without his crew, it still may be hard to handle the entirety of the Beast Pirates on his own.
The Roger Pirates Know Their Era Is In The Past
They’re Making Room For The Next Generation
Finally, if the remaining Roger Pirates were to make themselves known by raiding an Emperor’s territory or joining a battle like Marineford, it may draw unnecessary attention to themselves, and the rest of their crew. The Roger Pirates, as a collective, understand that their era is over. In many ways, the group wants to pass on the world to the next generation and is fairly confident crews like the Straw Hats can handle many issues it has.
I’ve heard rumors about you, Straw Hat Luffy! – Scopper Gaban
In the end, the main reason behind the Roger Pirates’ inactivity in One Piece is simply because they don’t want to do anything. These characters are enjoying their retirement that they earned through years of hard work. Plus, the Roger Pirates were never very altruistic, or even morally righteous, giving them no reason to save the world.
