The developer behind Eternal Remnant: The First Chapter has explained the game’s subtitle and what it might mean for the future. Indie developer Arcfinder Studios is making Eternal Remnant as a tribute to old-school JRPGs like Final Fantasy, complete with turn-based combat, a well-defined fantasy setting, and an emotional story of a sister and brother confronting loss and grief.
Game Rant recently spoke with Arcfinder Studios about Eternal Remnant: The First Chapter, and one of the topics discussed was the meaning of the game’s subtitle. According to the developer, Eternal Remnant: The First Chapter is intended to start a line of titles with a broadly connected story, similar to the Trails series.

As of this writing, an Eternal Remnant: The First Chapter demo is available to download for free on Steam, allowing curious JRPG fans to try out the game’s opening hours. During this brief demo, players are introduced to older sister Vera and her younger brother Arin as they search for Vera’s missing horse within the monster-filled caves near their home. Many questions are raised during this quick glimpse into the world of Eternal Remnant: The First Chapter, but the one with the biggest ramifications could be the mystery of the game’s title.
Eternal Remnant: The First Chapter Could Be Part of a New Series
Arcfinder’s idea is that each Eternal Remnant game will be a standalone story that ties back to the previous ones in some way, with players able to import a previous save file like the older Dragon Age games. The Second Chapter will be independent of the first, with Arcfinder also stating that the studio won’t rely on DLC to connect them. Each is a distinct game, with Arcfinder explaining,
“For folks wondering about the mention of “Chapter” in the title, this is so that we can tell a broad story through different games similar to Trails In The Sky. The idea is that when players start the Second Chapter, they can import their save profile from the first game or use a default profile. However, it’s important to note that it will be a standalone game and won’t rely on DLC for the chapter aspect. The Second Chapter and beyond will be standalone games just like the first.”
Of course, the developer will need to release Eternal Remnant: The First Chapter before shifting gears to future installments, and Arcfinder isn’t ready to give it an official release date yet. From what can be seen in the already-available Steam demo, Eternal Remnant looks to pay homage to Final Fantasy and other JRPGs of old with a few novel tricks up its sleeve, namely in how it allows characters to combine their Limit Breaks for special attacks. As the studio continues to work on Eternal Remnant: The First Chapter, Arcfinder plans to update the existing demo to give players a better idea of its progress.
