In case you missed it, on Thursday, much to the delight of the Internet, Dreamworks revealed its first look at Shrek 5. The movie, which is set for a Christmas 2026 release, immediately drew the ire of fans over the redesigns of both Shrek and Donkey.
Of course, with a release date so far out, there’s a chance that Dreamworks will decide to redesign Shrek. And if there’s one pop culture icon who knows what it’s like to be ugly, then it’s the movie version of Sonic.
Taking to TikTok, the official Sonic the Hedgehog movie account posted a comparison of the two Sonic designs, writing “for any green ogres looking for advice.”

Sonic Was Once Majorly Ugly
For the unaware, the Sonic that now graces the hit movie franchise isn’t the Sonic that was originally revealed. Back in 2019, when the first trailer for the movie hit, fans immediately dubbed the live-action version of the blue hedgehog, “Ugly Sonic.”
The backlash was so great that the movie’s director took to Twitter to announce that the character would be redesigned, a decision that eventually led to the first movie being delayed into 2020.
Eventually, the redesign was shown off, and, well, the rest is history.
That said, the lasting impact of “Ugly Sonic” still rings to this day. In 2022, Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers decided to make fun of the design, showcasing “Ugly Sonic” as an out-of-work hedgehog selling photos at comic book conventions.
Ultimately, only time will tell if “Ugly Shrek” gets a redesign or lives long enough to make it into Shrek 5. But if there’s a lesson to be learned from “Ugly Sonic,” it’s that, sometimes it’s best to redesign.
