Shinichiro Watanabe is one of the most famous anime directors of all time. He is best known for directing Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. Back in 2023, Shinichiro Watanabe announced that he is working on a new project called Lazarus. The anime was supposed to be released in 2024 but had to be delayed to 2025.
In January 2025, the episode count for Lazarus was confirmed to be 13, making it one of Watanbe’s shorter works.
This was followed by the news of Lazarus finishing production. With the anime’s release drawing near, the anime released a new trailer, which gives viewers an idea of what to expect from the anime.

Shinichiro Watanabe Teams Up With John Wick Director
After going through the trailer, it is safe to say that Shinichiro Watanabe has worked his magic again, and Lazarus will end up being one of the best anime of the year. The action scenes in the anime were overseen by Chad Stahelski, the creator of John Wick.
He revealed that Watanabe’s films served as an inspiration, which is why he was more than happy to work with him on Lazarus. The music for the anime is being composed by Kamasi Washington, Bonobo, and Floating Points. If the quality of staff working on the project is anything to go by, then Lazarus will be a certified hit.
Lazarus’ Voice Cast Has Been Confirmed
Lazarus has already announced the voice cast for the anime, and it is as follows:
- Mamoru Miyano (Hunter x Hunter, Pluto, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) as Axel
- Makoto Furukawa (Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, One Punch Man, Blue Lock) as Doug
- Maaya Uchida (High School DxD, Noragami) as Christine
- Yuma Uchida (Jujutsu Kaisen, Blue Lock, Boruto) as Leland
- Manaka Iwami (Fruits Basket, Spy × Family) as Eleina
- Akio Otsuka (One Piece, Vinland Saga, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) as Abel
- Koichi Yamadera (My Hero Academia, Gintama, Dragon Ball Super) as Dr. Skinner
- Megumi Hayashibara (Cowboy Bebop, Shaman King) as Hersch
Lazarus is set in the distant future when a doctor’s actions put humanity in danger. The doctor, Skinner, created a magical drug and made it publicly available. A few years later, Dr. Skinner reveals that the drug kills everyone in 3½ years. To handle this global crisis, a team of elite fighters is formed to find Dr. Skinner and a cure.
Lazarus has action as well as drama, so the episodes will not be boring. Each episode will have good pacing, so it won’t feel dragged out either.
Lazarus will be released on April 5, 2025.
