One of the most important mechanics players need to learn first in Monster Hunter Wilds is the weapon sharpening mechanic. If you don’t pay attention to the sharpness of your weapon, you run the risk of bouncing attacks off of monsters.

To play Monster Hunter Wilds with friends, you must either add your friend in-game or establish a private server to invite them to.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, weapon bouncing is something that occurs when your weapon can no longer break through the tough hide of monsters. This guide explains the basics of the weapon bouncing mechanic in MH Wilds and what you can do to prevent attacks from bouncing off monsters.
What Is Weapon Bouncing In Monster Hunter Wilds?
In Monster Hunter Wilds, weapons will bounce off of enemies if your weapon has Low Level Sharpness. While adventuring in the open world, or while on a hunt or a quest, you should see a small green Sword icon on the top-left of the main UI, beneath the Stamina meter.
As you connect hits with your weapon, this Sharpness Meter will slowly drain as your weapon becomes more dull.
- If this icon is nearly filled and green, your weapon attacks will deal full damage and easily slice through all but the most armored parts of highly defensive monsters.
- If the icon is yellow, most attacks will connect and deal slightly reduced damage, but against heavily armored enemies, there is a higher chance for attacks to bounce off.
- If this icon is orange, your weapon will deal significantly less damage, and the chance for attacks to bounce off of enemies becomes very likely
- If this icon is nearly depleted and red, practically all of your attacks will deal marginal damage and bounce off of any enemy, not just monsters

Cooking is a big part of survival in Monster Hunter Wilds. This is how players can cook a well-done steak.
Essentially, the more dull a weapon is, the more likely it is that hits made with that weapon will bounce off of enemies and deal next to no damage. Thankfully, Monster Hunter Wilds makes the process of preventing weapon bouncing relatively simple.
How To Stop Weapons Bouncing Off Enemies In MH Wilds
If your attacks are being deflected every time you try to hit an enemy, there’s only one thing you can do to fix weapon bouncing: resharpen your weapon. In Monster Hunter Wilds, Whetstones are the primary tool you will use to sharpen weapons.
You will receive a Whetstone during the first monster hunt, and the game should provide a brief tutorial on the sharpening system once your weapon dulls for the first time.
To use a Whetstone, hold down L1 (LB) to open up the context-sensitive radial menu. If you have not customized the radial menu yet, by default you will have to press down on the D-pad to open up the radial Equipment menu.
Then, tilt the right analogue stick up and release to use the Whetstone and sharpen your blade back into fighting shape.
You can use a Whetstone anytime in the open world, including while riding your Seikret. To prevent your weapon from getting dull enough to constantly bounce off enemies, Monster Hunter Wilds players should make it a habit to re-sharpen their weapon any time they mount up to chase down a fleeing monster.
