I never clicked with the space combat of Starfield, and while the sprawling sandbox freedom of No Man’s Sky holds an appeal, its flight isn’t quite what I’m looking for either. Elite Dangerous and X4 offer more robust simulations, but Everspace 2 is more my speed. Fast, exciting, and with the options to tune its more arcadey action with more simulation-style settings, it’s a loot-driven, interstellar answer to Diablo – and it’s about to get even bigger. Rockfish Games showcases four new systems coming with the Wrath of the Ancients expansion, including a long-requested return and a mysterious, forbidden region.
Loosely scheduled to arrive in the spring, Wrath of the Ancients will bring plenty of new quests, dangers, and loot to Everspace 2. Mysterious attacks across settlement 34 are threatening the space game’s fragile peace between the humans and Okkar, and an ancient threat looms on the horizon. As you branch beyond the borders of Colonial space, you’ll encounter everything from alien wormholes and intense radiation to strange ruins.
Firstly, we’ll be making a long-requested return to Aethon. The star system is part of the climactic narrative of the main story, but you haven’t been able to revisit it otherwise. Wrath of the Ancients changes that – but a warship graveyard filled with radiation fields and greedy scrappers scouring wreckages under the light of an unstable red star makes it a less-than-friendly place to be.

You’ll also make a trip to the Khait Dominion, the closest system on the Okkar rim to the Colonial border, and a particularly sacred spot for the reptilian race. It marked the point of a key conflict in the past when the human expansion effort got too near, but you’ll need to return if you’re going to uncover the secrets at play. With solemn monuments and a curious natural wormhole suspected to be connected to the ancients, there’s plenty to discover.
Moving into the heart of Okkar space, the Rhak Homeworlds play home to the center of its civilization. That means sprawling megastructures covering its planets, and giant orbital stations in the space around them. It’s home to two stars, with the second surrounded by ghostly plasma fields, and you’ll spot plenty of signs of the war between humans and Okkar even a decade after it ended.
Finally, we come to the most ancient of the Okkar worlds, a religious center known only as the ‘Forbidden System.’ Access is highly restricted – indeed, the presence of a non-Okkar there is all but entirely unprecedented. You’ll have to see how the events of Wrath of the Ancients play out to discover how and why you get there, and whether you’ll be welcomed when you arrive, Rockfish teases.
Rockfish Games plans to launch the Everspace 2 Wrath of the Ancients DLC in the spring of 2025. You can wishlist it on Steam if you want to keep up to date with when it becomes available.
