First-person shooters wouldn’t exist as they do today without the genre’s ‘90s explosion. Games like Doom, Quake, Marathon, Unreal Tournament, and Half-Life all came to define the FPS back then, and each is still worth trying today. This is equally true of Turok, Iguana Entertainment’s prehistoric and action-infused take on proceedings. Back in 2015 prolific remaster developer Nightdive Studios made Turok easily approachable for everyone, and now the team has suddenly made it even better.
If you’ve never played Turok, or fancy diving back in after all these years away, Nightdive’s new update is the perfect excuse. There are a slate of new features, menu options, and fixes to choose from. This ‘Next-Gen Update’ also means you can play the FPS game on Xbox Series X or PS5, with all the changes available across every platform, including PC.
Turok now has support for high refresh rates, so if you’ve got a monitor with 144Hz or above you’ll have the smoothest dinosaur-slaying experience yet. Nightdive even says the Brachiosaurus from a Turok beta rom has been “found and recovered,” and that you can now find them in the Treetops level. The run/walk toggle from the original game has also been added, so you can sneak up on more enemies from behind without being noticed. If you want to go in blasting, however, you can now bind multiple weapons to the same button to ensure that you cycle between them with ease.

Nightdive has even added a slate of new menu options to help modernize Turok, so you can now adjust the HUD, head bobbing, gameplay, and graphics options easier than ever. You can also go through individual audio options, while switching between Vulkan or Direct3D for your GPU, depending on which works best. There’s even “lots of additional scripting features for modders,” according to Nightdive, so if you’ve been waiting for a deluge of mods for the original Turok, this could be it.
I’ll admit this isn’t the most glamorous surprise update for a classic shooter (especially when compared to the recent Half-Life 2 overhaul), but Nightdive has still made playing Turok in 2025 smoother than ever. So if you’re looking for an old-school FPS to broaden your knowledge of the genre, or just love the idea of fighting dinosaurs, this Turok update is the way to go.
Don’t forget that Space Marine 2 developer Saber Interactive is also in the middle of making an entirely new Turok game, so you’ll want to keep an eye on that.
Nightdive Studios has updated the original Turok on all platforms for free, and you can experience the changes right now. Simply head right here, where you’ll also find full update notes.
