How To Win As Friedrich, Baroque In Civilization 7

Friedrich, Baroque eschews his Oblique counterpart’s focus on scientific achievement in favor of cultural prowess while maintaining Oblique’s overarching emphasis on military might. This makes for an… interesting combination, which might come across as somewhat at-odds, but there are real perks to the approach.

Friedrich, Baroque Leader Overview

Something which makes Friedrich, Baroque’s odd mixture function at least passably well is that Legacy Paths are more important in Civilization 7 than might first meet the eye. What we mean here is that there are times when Militaristic/Cultural will work quite nicely in your favor.

Those times are often tied to the Exploration Age, mind you, but consider that capturing Settlements earns Great Works, which contributes greatly to the Exploration Age’s religion-centric Legacy Path.

Culture

Gain a Great Work when you capture a Settlement for the first time.

Military

Gain an Infantry unit whenever you construct a Culture building.

How Do Friedrich’s Attributes Work?

Friedrich, Baroque operates on a simple premise: further your military ambitions with the aid of Culture. And that premise works in reverse: shore up your Cultural achievements for military benefit. It might not seem doable, but trust us, it works!

  1. Choose Your Wonders Wisely – In the Antiquity Age, the Cultural Legacy Path is linked to constructing seven Wonders. There are several which provide plenty of domination-minded benefits: Terracotta Army, Gate of All Nations, and so forth. Aim for those.
  2. Relics Galore – Revel in the Infantry units you’ll gain from constructing Temples in the Exploration Age, because you’re going to be constructing quite a few Temples. The Cultural Legacy Path throughout this era is all about religion – and converting conquered Settlements can be a big part of that equation.

What Civs Work Best With Friedrich, Baroque?

Friedrich, Baroque is rather malleable in this regard. Anything that serves to enhance his Culture is going to do great, and anything that bolsters his strength will work in tandem.

There’s no “wrong” choice between Cultural and Military Victories for Friedrich, Baroque, but the gem is that you can do well in chasing both.

Persia

Persia’s Immortal is a spectacularly powerful Infantry unit, and you’ll also gain +3 Combat Strength when attacking – which you’ll be doing quite a bit of via all those free Infantry units you’re earning.

The Pairadaeza unique Improvement adds +1 Gold (which is always nice) and – importantly – +1 Culture. As it’s an improvement, you can stack these; you just can’t place them beside one-another.

Aksum

Aksum has plenty of ways to increase your income, which is important for any civ; for warmongers, it means purchasing units aplenty and getting all those conquered Settlements up to speed.

The Hawilt unique Improvement adds +2 Gold, as well as +1 Culture for adjacent Wonders and other Hawilts. You’re going after Wonders, after all!

Rome

Rome’s Legion is another excellent Infantry unit, and you can secure more of a frontline against the rivals you intend to subjugate via the Legatus unique Commander’s Settlement-founding charge after three Promotions.

Both of Rome’s unique Buildings, the Temple of Jupiter and the Basilica, earn adjacency bonuses from Wonders. The latter even earns them from adjacent Culture Buildings. (They’re also great sources of other forms of wealth.)
