How to Get the Penny Pincher Achievement in Baldur's Gate 3

The Penny Pincher achievement in Baldur’s Gate 3 can be unlocked by defeating Gerringothe Thorm, also known as the toll collector, before she attacks the players on her turn. Given the restricted conditions to unlock the achievement, approaching the toll collector with a sound strategy is key to your success.

Since the toll collector has a massive pool of HP, taking her on in open combat is not ideal, especially if the initiatives don’t roll in your favor. Nevertheless, if you’ve been eyeing the Penny Pincher achievement in Baldur’s Gate 3, here are two effective strategies that guarantee the coveted trophy/achievement.

How To Unlock Fancy Footwork In Baldur’s Gate 3 (Achievement / Trophy Guide)

Baldur’s Gate 3 offers multiple ways to unlock the Fancy Footwork achievement/trophy—here are three methods you can use.

Talk Your Way Into Unlocking The Trophy/Achievement

Persuade Gerringothe Thorm Into Killing Herself

Since Gerringothe Thorm is open to conversation instead of turning immediately hostile, you can leverage this opportunity to persuade her to kill herself. She opens the conversation by asking “What do you bring?” and you can play along by choosing any dialogue option as long as it doesn’t lead to violence.

If you wish to defeat the Toll Collector with the power of clever speech, you’ll need to choose the following dialogue options and clear two difficult speech checks:

  • What do you require?
  • Toss the creature a gold piece.
  • I don’t hand out so much gold for so little in return.
  • [Persuasion] Why stay in this rotted building? Take your gold and be free. (DC18)
  • [Persuasion] Says who? Seems to be there’s no one here to oversee you. (DC21)

You can deceive or intimidate the toll collector into surrendering or dying, with the same difficulty class as persuasion checks.

Since the toll collector died without even a fight, you’ll unlock the associated Penny Pincher trophy/achievement.

As you can see, since going the persuasion route requires you to clear two challenging speech checks, it’s recommended to initiate this conversation with a charisma-based character. Items like Ring of Geniality

and cantrips like Friends

and Guidance

are your best bet at succeeding these checks.

Lae’zel can potentially gain the Best Offence is Virtually Nonsense inspiration following this strategy, provided you didn’t kill the remaining two Thorm mini-bosses via speech checks.

Shove The Toll Collector To Her Death

If your party lacks companions that aren’t proficient in speech checks, you can still unlock the Penny Pincher trophy/achievement by shoving the toll collector off the nearby ledge.

First, you’ll need to wait until the toll collector moves near the southern ledge and immediately go up to her to initiate the dialogue sequence. Then, take control of your strength-based companion and prepare to shove the toll collector off the ledge. Consider saving your game at this point in case she succeeds a strength-saving throw. You can increase your chances of successfully pushing her off the ledge by consuming the Elixir of Hill Giant Strength

or equipping the Club Of Hill Giant Strength

.

Falling from the ledge will knock the toll collector prone, and you can finish her off with a couple of ranged attacks or spells, and as a result, unlock the trophy/achievement. Lae’zel can also potentially gain the Masterful Execution inspiration following this strategy, provided you haven’t already killed the other two Thorm mini-bosses.
