Monster Hunter Wilds provides many activities for players to explore outside of hunts. Players can set up their portable grill to serve up their collection of ingredients, raise and manage their kinsects, and of course, take a moment to see what’s biting in a lake.
Players will not be able to start fishing right away, as players will need to first get a fishing rod. Players will get their fishing rod, along with many other tools, but progress through chapter 1. Even after getting this rod, players may be casting and wondering why fish seemingly ignore their lures. Here’s how players can get those fish to take the bait.

How to Fish in Monster Hunter Wilds
Progressing through Chapter 1-2 will reward players with many tools, including their fishing rod. Players may then go back to the lake where they started the game to try to catch the fish in this oasis. However, after several casts, they may be wondering why they are not catching anything. Luckily, fishing rods don’t have an upkeep like weapons to keep performing.
Each time the player takes out their Fishing Rod. The game will show how to cast the line and reel in fish.
Fish won’t suddenly just go for the line the moment you cast, and pulling it around can seemingly scare fish away. Players should cast their line to the side of some fish and then finesse it around and in their fish’s line of site. It might not seem like it’s working, but players need to have patience. Eventually, a fish will hone in on the line and take the bait. Once it bites, hold down the button prompt for your system to reel it in.
Just like how there are numerous types of monsters to hunt, there are also numerous types of fish to catch. Players should always stop by any lakes they see to catch some fish and see if they can find new ones they’ve never seen before. This can help fill out their field guide. It is also worth noting that players will need to have reeled in 30 whoppers in order to get the A-fish-ionado achievement/trophy.
What are Fish Used for in Monster Hunter Wilds?
- Cooking Meals
- Obtaining Items
- Filling in Field Guide
Catching fish offers many benefits. Merely catching them will give players Guild Points. Catching them will also give players items such as scales and fins. The fish themselves can be used as Ration ingredients when making meals. Players will be able to find potential fishing spots by opening up their map and checking for any bodies of water. Not all bodies of water will have fish, so if you don’t see anything swimming around, move along to the next one.
Fish are great for making meals due to them boosting the player’s defense. This can help tremendously when going on hunts against monsters you’ve never faced before.
