How To Beat Nerscylla In Monster Hunter Wilds

How To Beat Nerscylla In Monster Hunter Wilds

Originally introduced in Monster Hunter 4, Nerscylla is a Temnoceran monster, which is a fancy compound word to describe it as a insect with terrifying pincers. Which is why most of them are arachnids, and Nerscylla is one of the most unsettling of all. And with their return in Monster Hunter Wilds, they can disturb a whole new generation.

Every Monster Hunter Game In Chronological Order

Monster Hunter continues to be well and alive after almost two decades. With so many titles, it can be confusing to know how to play them in order.

First battled in the Iceshard Cliffs, Nerscylla can easily utilise the environment to their advantage and have quite a few feinting attacks to catch you by surprise, not to mention copious status ailments. Taking them down is a challenge, but far from impossible.

Nerscylla – Strengths And Weaknesses

Nerscylla is met the first time you enter the Iceshard Cliffs and rescue a rather philosophocial Lynian, Rove. As one of the few Temoncerans in the game, Nerscylla is a unique monster with few peers to compare them against. They move quickly, can fake you out with attacks, and host such a wide area of status ailments and shifting defenses that it’s hard to cover all your bases.

They’re also quite large, making it harder to target the more fragile areas with smaller weapons. Thankfully, Nerscylla still has plenty of openings to let you deal some serious damage. Let’s get a quick overview of them below.

  • Weak Point – Retractable Pincers.
  • Elemental/Ailment Weakness – Fire before Mantle is broke, Thunder afterwards. Paralysis
  • Elemental/Ailment Strengths – Water, Dragon, Sleep. Thunder on many parts until Mantle is broken.
  • Best Weapon Damage – Blunt weapons for hard sections, Severing weapons for softer sections, Ranged weapons for the stinger

Even from that, you can tell that no one strategy can conquer Nerscylla. Their claws are incredibly sturdy, while their mantle protects them from Thunder attacks, yet Fire is much less of a weakness once it’s removed. And on top of that, they boast a massive variety of status effects that can be hard to have defenses for all of.

On the flip side, their pincer attack is a great chance to deal massive damage. It gets highlighted as a weak point when it comes out, letting you target it with Focus attacks.

Best Equipment To Fight Nerscylla

Nerscylla is a complicated one to prep for because they have so much to consider. Should you bring Fire or Thunder elements to deal with them? Should you try to force through the claws to break them, or focus your attacks on the softer parts instead? There’s a lot to consider, and it’s best to just consider one strategy at a time to maximise your defenses rather than dividing them all.

The Comaqchi Accessory grants Sleep Resistance so you can survive Nerscylla’s stinger attack. Meanwhile, the Rompopolo armor set offers Poison Resistance from the pincers. You can choose to mix both sets together for a bit of defense against both, or equip the full Rompopolo set for even more poison resistance.

When it comes to weapons, sharpness is important to keep in mind, for Severing weapons especially. Nerscylla’s claws are incredibly tough and need very high sharpness to damage effectively. This is important to keep in mind if you want to reach the head for high damage. Charge Blade can avoid this by powering-up the sword, but other Severing weapons will have to keep that sharpness high. Try to get some blue sharpness weapons at a minimum if they’re available to you.

Nerscylla – Fight Breakdown And Moves

Despite their towering stature, Nerscylla can move incredibly swiftly, and can easily swap between attacks at a moment’s notice, and even reposition themselves away from you with speedy use of webs. The status effects from their various attacks are the biggest thing to look out for, but it’s important to keep mobile so you can avoid it’s very sudden attacks.

Here’s each of their major attacks and how best to counter them:

Move

Description

Counter

Claw Swipe

Nerscylla stands up briefly and quickly slashes ahead of them.

This attack isn’t too powerful and can be easily withstood with a shield or hyper armour.

Stinger Stab

Nerscylla lifts itself up and stabs directly underneath themselves with their stinger, inflicting sleep.

This attack doesn’t deal much damage, but instantly inflicts sleep. If you see them standing up, move out of the way so you’re not underneath.

Web Shot

While a distance away from Nerscylla, they will stand up and fire off a volley or webs. This web you if they hit, and remain on the floor for a brief while.

The radius of this attack is quite short, so it is easy to avoid. Try to close the distance when they do this move to deal damage while they recover.

Pincer Attack

Nerscylla will open up their retractable pincers and start rushing towards you. This attack can be held for quite a while before striking. Inflicts poison.

Because Nerscylla can hold the attack for so long, don’t dodge until the last second, or block it if you have a high enough Guard skill. You can use a Focus attack while their pincers are exposed for high damage.

Slam Attack

Nerscylla will reel back before dropping their entire body on top of you.

This is easily dodged and gives you lots of time to punish Nerscylla.

Web Dash

Nerscylla will shoot a web and use it to reposition themselves. You take damage if Nerscylla hits you while moving.

This can be used to move further from or closer to the player. If you see them shoot a web, dodge out of the way but try to remain close to them to attack during the cooldown.

Web Swing

In areas with a ceiling, Nerscylla can fire a web and swing to reposition, landing with a powerful attack.

Like web dash, dodge away from the attack but try to keep yourself close to Nerscylla.

Web Dive

While in its nest, Nerscylla can dive beneath the webs and perform a surprise attack on the player.

Nerscylla can also get caught in these webs if you stun them while they’re crawling underneath, giving you a great chance to attack them.

Web Grab

While in its nest, Nerscylla can dangle from its web and grab anyone that walks underneath them.

When you see Nerscylla hanging on a web, use Slinger ammo to shoot them back down.

Unlike the other Temnoceran, Lala Barina, Nerscylla relies on its webs quite a lot for mobility and trapping you. This gives them much more mobility than they should have, but means they are relatively stationary when they aren’t using webs to navigate. This makes the stinger and pincers its most dangerous attacks, though the former is easily dodged, and the latter can be punished very effectively with Focus attacks.

Nersyclla – Drops And Materials

Nerscylla can be fought in both Low Rank and High Rank, though the overall drops and area to aim for remain the same in both. The claw, mantle, and stinger are where you want to focus your attacks to get the rarer pieces, though may of them stil have a decently high chance of dropping from Wounds and Carvings.

Here is every material you can get from Nerscylla:

Bizarrely, Nerscylla only drops a claw if you break its Left Claw.

Nerscylla does not gain any new materials in their High Rank rendition, only improved versions of its original ones. Because of that, all of its drop rates remain the same as well, and come from all the same sources. Thankfully, it isn’t too hard to break any of their parts, so you should be able to stock up on its materials in no time.
