Far Cry New Dawn Still Holds the Keys to a Ton of Great Potential Sequels



Far Cry New Dawn is getting new attention thanks to the title’s recent addition to the popular Xbox Game Pass service, with more players finally checking out the 2019 release’s chaotic post-apocalyptic world. The Far Cry franchise has found a lot of success with spin-off titles over the years, with titles like New Dawn offering smaller-scaled stopgaps between the IP’s more expansive mainline releases.

While the overall experience of Far Cry New Dawn has received mixed reviews over the years from the franchise’s community, its narrative premise is quite unique in the way that it offers an insight into the consequences of one of Far Cry 5‘s explosive endings. It offered a perspective that would otherwise be left unexplored for the series. While Ubisoft should still make a concerted effort to provide fresh worlds and stories for players to enjoy, any future Far Cry spin-offs should consider exploring how the settings of already-established mainline games may have also been altered by the franchise’s most destructive event.

Future Far Cry Spin-Offs Could Give Great Depth to Beloved Past Locations

While the mainline Far Cry games have found a lot of success through their portrayals of varied fictional regimes and wild landscapes across the world, spin-off titles have also found a good home within the franchise. Prior games like Far Cry: Blood Dragon and Far Cry Primal did an excellent job at taking pre-existing major locations from mainline Far Cry games and making them unrecognizable through a different lens.

Blood Dragon plunged Far Cry 3‘s Rook Islands into a neon 80s-inspired futuristic landscape, while Primal gave the main map of Far Cry 4 a prehistoric makeover. 2019’s New Dawn achieved a similar feat with Far Cry 5‘s major location, giving fans a fascinating glimpse into the world after one of Far Cry 5‘s most explosive endings. While none of Far Cry 5‘s endings are considered canon, the well-known “Resist” ending plunges the world into nuclear catastrophe and widespread devastation in an event known as The Collapse.

Far Cry‘s outlandish locations go beyond pre-historical portrayals and futuristic dystopia. Far Cry 5 even features a DLC that takes players to Mars.

New Dawn offers a fascinating insight as to what human civilization looks like in Far Cry 5‘s Hope County 17 years after The Collapse; chaotic, power-hungry gangs rule a land that has bloomed with nuclear-charged flora and fauna. This lawless post-apocalyptic setting is the perfect justification for Far Cry to lean into even more eccentric and outlandish narratives and gameplay than usual. The globe-spanning nuclear damage of The Collapse begs the question of how Far Cry‘s other major locations fared following the attacks.

Kyrat’s Role in The Collapse is Perfect For a Far Cry Spin-Off

Crucially, the Pagan: Control DLC for Far Cry 6 hints to the fact that the iconic Pagan Min was responsible for the nuclear attacks on the USA, and Kyrat was most likely subjected to retaliatory strikes as a result. A future Far Cry spin-off could revisit an irradiated Kyrat post-Collapse in the same way New Dawn focused on Hope County, either showcasing how Pagan rules over the resulting dystopian landscape, or how the power vacuum of his absence is filled by those beneath him.

Of course, this same formula could also be applied to past Far Cry locations like the Rook Islands or even the more recent Yara, but the direct role that Kyrat plays in the Collapse makes the concept of a post-nuclear spin-off all the more interesting. These spin-off titles should not come at the cost of any future mainline entries to the Far Cry franchise, but the revisiting of such beloved prior locations as well as iconic figures like Pagan Min makes the concept of more Collapse-centered spin-offs for the franchise seem so exciting.
