Death Stranding 2: On the Beach continues protagonist Sam Porter Bridges’ journey as he and his allies survive the strange, post-apocalyptic world they live in. The story centers around a much different version of the United States after a massive event brought the Beach, the world between the afterlife and the living world, to the living. It’s a trippy narrative, and Death Stranding 2 promises even more bizarre moments.
A sequel to Kojima Productions’ very first game is an exciting prospect for a lot of longtime Kojima fans, but recent developments with the IP signal that Death Stranding 2 may be the start of something much bigger. There is a lot of speculation surrounding Death Stranding 2, but one of the biggest mysteries of all is exactly how Hideo Kojima plans to expand the universe.

The Death Stranding Franchise is Positioned to Continue for Years
Kojima Productions’ Collaboration With A24
- Kojima Productions announced in 2023 that the studio is teaming up with A24 to adapt a Death Stranding movie.
As of right now, the Death Stranding movie is incredibly secretive, and there’s no telling when the film adaptation will be ready. All that is really confirmed is that it will dive deeper into the mystery of the titular “Death Stranding” event that sent the world into chaos. With Kojima being fond of collaborating with major actors and directors, there is bound to be an exciting cast and crew set for the production. The most exciting part of all, though, is that it brings the Death Stranding franchise to an even larger audience. A24 has been a trailblazer in the film industry for the past decade, and the studio is likely the perfect fit for such a game adaptation.
In the official Kojima Productions statement regarding the adaptation, Kojima states, “I have been attracted to their creations, and they have even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years. Now, we are making a Death Stranding movie together.” It’s an exciting development that sets the stage for Death Stranding to be a far-reaching IP.
Hideo Kojima has been pictured with director Ari Aster, who has made A24 hits like Midsommar and Hereditary, leading some to theorize that he could direct the film adaptation.
Kojima Productions Now Has Full Control Over the Death Stranding IP
- Kojima Productions announced last year that the studio had gained full ownership of Death Stranding.
On the five-year anniversary of Death Stranding, Kojima Productions confirmed the studio now had complete control of its creation, potentially ending the PlayStation exclusivity of future entries in the series. The first chapter released on Xbox last year, cementing a major milestone for the franchise. This now makes it highly possible that Death Stranding 2 marks the end of a PlayStation-only launch. It has yet to be confirmed whether Death Stranding 2 will eventually come to Xbox or not, but it seems like a given. Just like the movie adaptation, this allows the IP to reach even more people.
Kojima Productions is currently working on two other projects, too. OD is an experimental horror game, while Physint will be an espionage thriller.
After Death Stranding 2, More Chapters Could Be On the Way
It’s possible that Death Stranding 2 may be the final chapter in the series, but with Kojima now having total control, there could be years of entries on the horizon. If there’s one thing that Kojima excels at, it’s being imaginative, and that might mean he has barely scratched the surface of Death Stranding‘s wild lore.
Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years.
Death Stranding 2 is just one of many games slated for the year, and more news is coming soon. It’s been confirmed that Hideo Kojima will have a dedicated SXSW panel on March 9, so a release date may be on the list of subjects to be discussed.
