CD Projekt Red Dev Comments on Gwent in The Witcher 4

Summary

  • CD Projekt Red plans to include Gwent in The Witcher 4, confirmed by a developer.
  • Gwent was popular in The Witcher 3, now a standalone game.

A developer at CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the studio plans to include Gwent in The Witcher 4. Since The Witcher 4‘s reveal at The Game Awards last year, gamers have been speculating about what features from the series’ past it may or may not include.

Gwent is a popular card game that was first playable as a mini-game in The Witcher 3. The game mode had a deceptive amount of depth, and became immensely popular among The Witcher 3 players. Such was its success that it would later become its own standalone title, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, allowing gamers to finally play Gwent player-versus-player. Official support for the game came to an end in 2023, although many hoped a future Witcher title would bring back the game mode.

There’s good news for players who wanted to see Gwent in The Witcher 4. Online services lead at CD Projekt Red Leszek Krupiński confirmed that the studio has “some plans for Gwent in W4” in a reply to a fan. It’s a surprise confirmation at this early stage, but it’s still more than welcome in the drought of news about the title. Krupiński doesn’t give anything away beyond this – it could mean a minigame much like the Witcher 3 version, or something a little more substantial this time around. Either way, it seems that even with Ciri taking the place of Geralt as the protagonist of The Witcher 4, the game of Gwent will be available all the same.

CD Projekt Red Has Plans For Gwent in The Witcher 4

With very little known about The Witcher 4 at this point, gamers continue to speculate about what the game will include. Occasionally, CD Projekt Red even has to step in and stop some speculation before it becomes too rampant. For example, a Witcher 4 developer recently commented on speculation about changes made to Ciri’s face, dismissing the rumor that CD Projekt Red had made changes to her model after the reaction from some areas of the community to the Game Awards trailer.

Fans shouldn’t expect to see much from CD Projekt Red in 2025. The studio has been pretty transparent about The Witcher 4‘s development, and it certainly doesn’t seem as though the game will be in any place to release any time soon. 2025 should be a year of tempered expectations, where anything players can learn about the game is a bonus while CD Projekt Red does the hard work.
