Best Cyberpunk 2077 Comic Series

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most popular open world games to date, but did you know that it also has several of its own dedicated comic books? Ten of Swords

A Prequel To Phantom Liberty

Ten of Swords is the shortest of the Cyberpunk 2077 comics and features only a single issue. However, it is still worth reading, especially for fans of Phantom Liberty, since the story revolves around detective Solomon Reed and explains some of his backstory.

The comic features brilliant artwork from Miguel Valderrama and has an interesting story following both Reed and Songbird in Dog Town. While it is not quite as original as some of the other comics in the sense that the characters will be familiar, it still provides a good insight into how ‘justice’ works in Night City.

Where’s Johnny?

A Throwback To Silverhand’s Attack on Arasaka

Where’s Johnny is an interesting story which follows Wallace, a WNS News journalist who is hell-bent on tracking down Johnny Silverhand after the Arasaka HQ nuclear explosion. Set in 2023, it shows Night City from more of a retro perspective than we are used to with Cyberpunk 2077.

The story is contained within a single 72-page issue and introduces many new characters to the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. The art style perfectly reflects the flashback to an earlier period and is rendered in a beautiful classic style by Giannis Milonogiannis.

Big City Dreams

Shows Life At The Bottom of NC Society

Big City Dreams follows the story of Tasha and Mirek, two siblings who sit at the very lowest rungs of Night City society. As scavengers, they deal in the business of stealing and selling tech, ranging from cyberware to braindances.

The art style is of a very high quality and features polished, multi-layered illustrations by Filipe Andrade and Alessio Fioriniello. Much like Where’s Johnny? this is a standalone story contained in a single graphic novel.

XOXO

A Love Story Amidst Gang Warfare

XOXO is probably the most divergent of the Cyberpunk comics due to its very unique and more cartoonish art style. The 4-part story, however, revolves around a bitter gang dispute between Maelstrom and The Moxes and a romance between members of either faction.

Jakub Rebelka’s unique art style makes this arguably the most psychedelic tale of the series, but this often works in its favor. Overall, it provides an interesting insight into the ways gangs operate and interact with one another in Night City, just be prepared to get heartbroken.

Your Voice

A Highly Stylized Cyberpunk Tale

Your Voice follows NCART maintenance worker Todd and his journey after witnessing a mysterious incident involving the Maelstrom gang. The story, while short, is quite broad in scope and even features an appearance from the legendary Johnny Silverhand.

What makes the story good is the unique perspective from which it is told, and Todd’s character gives us a great insight into life as an average worker in Night City. The illustrations by Danijel Zezelj are some of the best in the entire collection, featuring an incredible amount of detail and sharply rendered style.

Blackout

The Dark Side of Braindancing

Following a braindance repair technician, Blackout is certainly an interesting concept and makes good use of Cyberpunk 2077 lore to tell its tragic tale of addiction and aspiration.

The story has darker subject matter than many of the others, but it is portrayed brilliantly through the unique artwork of Roberto Ricci, which gives Night City an especially oppressive feel. Overall, it is the best story for those who are interested in the netrunning, braindances and body modification in the Cyberpunk universe.

Kickdown

High-Octane Street Racing Action

Kickdown is the fifth Cyberpunk 2077 comic book series and delves deeper into the culture of street racing in Night City. The story explores the disputes between different gangs such as the Tyger Claws and Maelstrom, as well as the serious and competitive nature of the racing.

Some of the best illustrations and cover designs can be attributed to the Kickdown series and the wonderful work done by illustrators Jake Elphick and Tommaso Bennato. One particular highlight is the Akira-inspired cover design the D variant of issue 1.

You Have My Word

A Tragic Tale of Revenge

Written by CD Projekt RED’s narrative lead, Bartosz Sztybor, You Have My Word is an engrossing tale of tragedy and revenge centering around a family connected to the “Valentinos” gang.

In addition to having a great story full of twists and turns, it also provides an insight into the ruthless gang life which permeates much of Night City. The illustrations of Jesús Hervás certainly bring the tale to life in a unique style which is perfectly suited to the setting and subject matter.

Trauma Team

An Intense and Unpredictable Journey

Centered around a novice medic after a job-gone-wrong, Trauma Team is an engrossing and action-packed story which sheds light on the controversial practices and moral dilemmas within the medical corporation.

Cullen Bunn’s excellent story is complimented by the evocative illustrations of Miguel Valderrama to make it one of the best stories in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. Additionally, the cover art is exceptional across all issues and variations.

Psycho Squad

A Perfect Story for the Cyberpunk Universe

Following the elite MaxTac squad SPAR Delta, Psycho Squad is a brutal insight into both cyberpsychosis and the corruption of Night City’s authority. The story is similar to Trauma Team in a way but has more depth in terms of exploring Night City’s extensive corporate lore.

Visually, it is one of the most vibrant and detailed stories thanks to the expert illustrations by Judge Dredd artist Kieran McKeown. Psycho Squad also has some of the best series cover variants, with Niko Henrichon’s designs standing out in particular.
