In a new blog post, Ubisoft has explored how progression will be handled in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. With two protagonists to play as, both Naoe and Yasuke will have unique Mastery trees to progress through, which are tied to their weapons and specific archetypes. Yasuke is the samurai, and Naoe is the assassin. These will complement the different play styles of Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ dual protagonists. Players will be able to unlock abilities, with each weapon having two ability slots. According to Ubisoft, this will add “new gameplay twists” to the combat in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Will Have Deep Progression Mechanics
It will also introduce Knowledge Ranks. Knowledge can be acquired throughout the game by completing non-violent activities, as “a way for us to connect the development of our dual character’s minds with their physical skills.” Knowledge is shared between characters, meaning progression is made no matter who players choose to play as. This will allow tons of progression with new passive abilities, even after all the skills have been unlocked in the aforementioned Mastery trees. There’s tons to unpack here, and the full extent of it likely won’t be revealed until Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ release date.
Aside from Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it seems that Ubisoft really is betting big on its flagship franchise over the next few years. Assassin’s Creed‘s rumored release plans reportedly involve a new game every six months for the next decade, which seems incredibly ambitious. It remains to be seen if Ubisoft can pull this off while avoiding quality issues and fatigue from gamers, but only time will tell.
