Hierarchy in the Demon World
The Demon Castle Reflected a Demonic Power Struggle
One of Solo Leveling’s biggest sins is its refusal to follow certain characters beyond their utility within a certain arc, so even though we’ve been introduced to the Demon Realm’s denizens in some way, they’re not about to become recurring characters. However, Esil herself returns in the Solo Leveling sequel, Solo Leveling: Ragnarök, which features Sung Jinwoo’s son as the main character and Shadow Monarch in training. During episode 8 of Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow-, “Looking Up Was Tiring Me Out”, Esil gives a little more insight into the situation of the Gates and Dungeons from the perspective of the magic beasts that are found therein, but the System prevents her from revealing too much information. For the demons, their current predicament is effectively an isekai situation. Their society is fragmented under the rule of Baran, the Demon King, who led them into a war that left a huge chunk of the demon population dead.
The Radiru Family may be a noble clan in the Demon Realm, but there are several rungs on the ladder of aristocracy, and they’re on the lower end of the spectrum. Esil’s father, despite the fact that he looks just like Vlad Tepes, isn’t very tough, and that’s confirmed by his anxiety around Jinwoo. Despite the fact that he knew someone had killed both Vulcan and Metus on the lower floors, he sent his daughter and a small strike team to investigate Jinwoo’s activities. The Solo Leveling:ARISE mobile game gives us a bit more context about the Radiru Family, with it revealing that Esil’s expert combat skills were instrumental in building the clan’s reputation, embedding her father’s instruction to achieve as many victories as possible on the battlefield, which gave rise in part to her more underhanded tactics. By defeating Baran, Jinwoo freed the Radiru Family from the hierarchy that had been in place for hundreds of years, but the first revolution he caused in the Demon Realm was in the mind and heart of Esil Radiru.
Radiru Family Members
There’s No Information About Other Members of the Radiru Family
All we get to learn about the Radiru Family from the Solo Leveling anime is that they’re part of demonic aristocracy, albeit nobles of a lower station, and they fiendishly protect their territory from intruders. There isn’t much else to them, at least from what is shown in the series, which is a little disappointing, as it would be interesting to see what the Radiru Family’s new position as rulers of the Demon Realm actually meant for them or the actual place. There are also no other members of the Radiru Family who are introduced, and we can barely even count Esil’s father, based on the fact that we don’t even get his name.
The man was such a non-threat that the System HUD didn’t even identify him, or Esil, for that matter, even when she was actively a hostile, which is strange. One could theorize that the System now only clocks major threats, and now that he’s gotten much stronger, deep into S-Rank territory, enemies like Esil or her father simply no longer threaten him. The problem with that is the fact that Esil is strong, even for her species, and would match up to an S-Rank Hunter in combat. As nebulous as the S-Rank descriptor gets, it’s still highly significant therefore not the kind of enemy Jinwoo could simply “not recognize”.
