Thomas the Tank Engine is coming to Train Sim World 5, but if you’re looking for the modder responsible, you won’t find them. In a surprising but welcome move, the transport sim’s developers have got official approval to add this iconic children’s character to the game and also include some of his pals.

Modders have long considered it their duty to insert Thomas the Tank Engine into every game they can get their hands on, whether it’s transforming Skyrim’s dragons into the popular children’s character, or dialling up Resident Evil Village’s horror with the train-faced Count Theodora. But now, simulation game Train Sim World 5 is taking on the modders with its new Thomas and Friends Visit the West Somerset Railway DLC.

No, we’re not making that up. Developer Dovetail Games has got official approval from Mattel, holders of the rights to the Thomas and Friends franchise, to include Thomas as well as Annie, Clarabel, Diesel and the Troublesome Trucks, and others.

You won’t just be randomly riding around in Thomas the Tank Engine, however, though that’ll certainly be an option. Dovetail has promised the DLC will be story driven, “Featuring a fun narrative that follows Thomas and his friends on their visit to the West Somerset Railway.”

It’s also set to be extra accessible to newcomers. So if you’ve got young ones who live, breathe and sleep Thomas and Friends you should be able to put them down in front of your PC and watch them live their dream.

Thomas and Friends Visit the West Somerset Railway, which requires the base Train Sim World 5 game, will cost $24.99 / £19.99 and arrives this spring. We’ve got our fingers crossed that Dovetail has slipped Macho Conductor Randy Savage in somewhere.

Train Sim World 5 isn’t the only game that lets you take to the tracks. We’ve rounded up the best train games or if it’s the open road you’re after, why not try the best truck games?
