Summary
- An official Pokemon animation reveals that Latios can alter their appearance like Latias.
- Fans had long speculated about Latios’ abilities due to past invisibility portrayals.
- Pokemon Legends: Z-A might introduce Mega Latias and Mega Latios, expected to launch in late 2025.
A new official Pokemon animation has confirmed that Latios can look like other Pokemon in front of others. For years, this ability had only been attributed to Latias, since various Pokemon media never showcased Latios using the same skill.
According to its Pokedex description, the Legendary Pokemon from Hoenn Latias can use its glass-like down feathers to reflect light and alter its appearance. Latias is seen using this ability in official Pokemon content like the 2000s movie Pokemon Heroes, when Latias transforms into a young girl and befriends Ash. Although this light-reflection skill means that Latias isn’t exactly a shape-shifting Pokemon like Ditto and Mew, fans have never questioned that Latias can canonically change its aspect as a disguise. However, over the years, the Pokemon community has long debated whether its peer Latios could have the same talent. Now, it seems The Pokemon Company has finally addressed this matter just in time for Pokemon Day 2025.

To celebrate the franchise’s anniversary, the official Japanese Pokemon YouTube channel released an animated short starring Dragonite. Multiple Pokemon appear in the video but, as pointed out by Reddit user RadDudesman, Latias and Latios can be seen near the end disguised as a Flygon and a Salamence, respectively. Latias is the first to return to its original form and Latios does the same the next second. This may be the first official piece of Pokemon media that shows Latios altering its aspect with light reflection, thus confirming fans’ theories about its abilities. Latios and Latias are among the most popular Dragon-Type Pokemon in the franchise, and now players have cleared some long-standing doubts about them.

It is worth noting that the Pokemon animated series has featured Latias and Latios turning invisible many times. The debate could finally be over thanks to the newest animated short, and hopefully, future Pokemon content will feature Latios exploiting this skill more often. Pokemon Legends: Z-A is also bringing back Mega Evolutions, so there is a chance that Mega Latias and Mega Latios could appear in the game.
The Pokemon Company recently confirmed that Pokemon Legends: Z-A will launch in late 2025 for Nintendo Switch. Pokemon fans have already noticed some changes made to models in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, but the game’s latest trailer has received an overall positive response.
