Moon Knight Will Return To The MCU, But His Future Is A Concern

Moon Knight is one of the most unique heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that is what has made him so compelling. Although he falls into the anti-hero category, Moon Knight offers something unique both visually and from a character perspective. He’s a rather peculiar individual, but the first season of Moon Knight on Disney Plus proved to be popular.

The show caught people’s attention because it was different, and with a critics score of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, the mini-series certainly proved to be of high quality. However, with only six episodes, there simply wasn’t enough content, which left the fans wanting much more from the series. The latest news surrounding the future of the character has confirmed that’s not happening, and it is something to be concerned about.

Moon Knight Season Two Will Not Be Happening

Moon Knight initially dropped on Disney Plus back in 2022, and since then, fans have been patiently waiting to hear about the future of the show. Marvel TV executive Brad Winderbaum recently revealed that there are no specific plans for a second season. He told ComicBook.com, “So I think Marvel Television has happened in waves, and I think Moon Knight happened in a wave of shows that were going to establish characters that would tie into the future,” He then went on to discuss what could come next. “And moving forward, our priorities have shifted. We’re making shows as shows that can exist as annual releases, more like television. I would love to see a Moon Knight season 2, but there are plans for Moon Knight down the road.”

The fact that a second season of the show isn’t happening is disappointing because the series could quickly have been developed further due to the mythology surrounding the character and the cliffhanger it ended on. With a significant star, Oscar Isaac, taking on the lead role, audiences presumed there would be big long-term plans for Moon Knight, but it’s hard to see that now. Even though Marvel has claimed that the Moon Knight will return, it’s tough to imagine how that will happen.

It’s Hard To Imagine A Moon Knight Movie

One way Moon Knight could return to the MCU would be through a stand-alone film. This would allow Steven Grant’s story to be fully explained, with his Moon Knight alias being tapped into. It’s a show that could lean into being a lot more violent if it wanted to, and that would work well with the recent shift in tone from Marvel. Deadpool & Wolverine made over $1 billion at the box office as an R-rated movie, while Daredevil: Born Again is also set to be extremely violent. That could work for Moon Knight, as he’s a fairly aggressive character, but it’s hard to imagine Marvel Studios pulling the trigger on a film based purely around him.

If Marvel Studios isn’t willing to create a second season for Moon Knight where the pressure would be significantly lower, it’s hard to picture them taking a risk on a fully fledged movie. Moon Knight isn’t one of Marvel’s best-known characters. Therefore, it’s a movie that isn’t guaranteed to be a monumental hit for Marvel Studios, thus making it unlikely to happen.

Moon Knight Will Struggle To Fit Into An Ensemble Cast

If there isn’t going to be a second season of Moon Knight and a solo film is unlikely, the only other option for using him in the future would be as part of a different film in an ensemble cast. This is something that Marvel has done with many characters, such as War Machine, and until their MCU show came out, Winter Soldier and Falcon. It’s a way of increasing the interest and the superheroes involved in a film without overly committing to a character. However, with War Machine, it is easy to fit them in as their powers are quick and straightforward, making them perfect to plug in as supporting characters. However, that’s not really the case with Moon Knight, as his backstory and powers are complicated and unique. They would take plenty of explanation to new fans, and that’s something the character might not be guaranteed in an ensemble cast.

It feels like Marvel Studios didn’t necessarily have a long-term vision for Moon Knight when they brought him into the MCU, and that is becoming clear to see. That’s why it’s now worrisome about what will happen to his character. He’s not a simple one to just throw into another hero’s movie to blend in. Moon Knight takes a lot of commitment and effort on Marvel’s behalf, and if they do not see a huge reward, then he could end up being cast to the side. That would be a shame, as he’s a character with real potential, as the Moon Knight series proved. But at this stage, his overall future is bleak, regardless of what quotes come from Marvel.
