Monster Hunter Wilds has peaked at over 1.3 million players on Steam following its launch on Friday, Feb. 28.
The latest installation in the Monster Hunter Wilds franchise hit 1,307,976 players on launch, according to SteamDB, making it the second most played game on Steam in that 24-hour peak.

Monster Hunter Wilds Becomes Second Most-Played Game On Steam At Launch
Monster Hunter Wilds beat out Dota 2, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, Marvel Rivals, and Rust to become the second most played game on Steam, with only Counter-Strike 2 seeing more play.
The game also becomes the sixth most played game of all time on Steam, dethroning Dota 2 from that position, and earning a place within a pantheon that includes Black Myth: Wukong, Lost Ark, Palworld, Cyberpunk 2077, and Elden Ring (some of the best RPG games ever).

The huge launch makes it Capcom’s biggest PC launch ever, and potentially the biggest launch ever for a Monster Hunter title (although PS5 player figures are not publicly available).
The massive player numbers, however, are tempered by a mixed set of reviews on Steam. Players have criticized the game for its poor graphical optimization, and lower running speed, even when compared to the beta and Monster Hunter Wilds benchmark released earlier this month.

Beyond this, there has been criticism of Capcom for potentially ‘greedy’ monetization – players will only be able to customize their character once before needing to pay real world money for more alterations.
Regardless, Monster Hunter Wilds’ release has been generally well accepted, with few refuting that this is another great entry in a beloved franchise. One that, like other Monster Hunter games before it, slowly sands down the awkward edges and makes it even more enjoyable and accessible than ever.
