Summary
- The Monster Hunter series hints at a post-apocalyptic setting through lore and in-game elements.
- The Artian Armor and Weapons suggest a regression in society due to past technological advancements.
- Monster Hunter Wilds provides extensive lore on the fall of the technologically advanced Wyverian people.
Debate about the setting of the Monster Hunter series has raged for years now. Is it post-apocalyptic? Is it post-disaster but not quite post-apocalyptic? Is it just set in a time when civilization wasn’t as technologically advanced?
A big reason for this debate comes from the Artian Armor set, which has been prevalent throughout the series’ history. Despite looking semi-futuristic, the armor is described as being “made from the remains of an excavated artifact. Its origins are a mystery lost to time.”

Monster Hunter Wilds Review: Don’t Think, Just Hunt
Monster Hunter Wilds is a more approachable, if slightly more mindless Monster Hunter.
It’s theorized that a disaster similar to that of the Schrade Kingdom, which was destroyed by Fatalis, had befallen the world, setting it back in time, thus explaining the Artian Armor. However, this has never been confirmed in the lore.
After dozens of entries in the franchise, Monster Hunter Wilds has given us our biggest hint as to what’d previously happened, confirming theories that the games are set in a post-apocalyptic world.
Monster Hunter Wilds Artian Armor Confirms Series Post-Apocalyptic Setting
Monster Hunter Wilds goes some way to confirming the series’ post-apocalyptic setting.
It explains that Wyveria and the Wyverian people were so technologically advanced they could create artificial life. It is the Wyverians who created Wilds’ Guardian Monsters.
While that alone would be enough to suggest that society had regressed, Wilds’ new Artian Weapons offer further explanation on how Wyverian technology worked. During various cutscenes, the game implies that the Monster Hunter nation had become a beacon of technology with its technological advancements, which, unfortunately, invited wars from other countries.
It’s inferred that Wyveria used its artificially created monsters to defend the country, but one of them was so powerful that it ended up turning everything they knew into ash and dust.
Wilds provides the most comprehensive lore we’ve seen about the fall of the Wyverian’s and it will be interesting to see what other tidbits crop up now the game has launched.
