But one of the most important, yet understated ways that your hunter gains power is by raising their hunter rank, or HR. Your hunter’s HR represents the total amount of time they’ve spent learning to master the Forbidden Lands and the monsters that roam it. What Is Hunter Rank?
Hunter Rank is a number that represents your hunter’s level. Unlike in traditional RPGs where increasing your character’s level improves their stats or attributes, increasing your HR does not actually improve your hunter’s ability to fight monsters. Rather, your HR level determines what monsters you’re allowed to fight.
Think of it as the same thing as ranks in the army. The higher your rank, the more difficult and important tasks you’ll be trusted to handle. Every mission in Monster Hunter Wilds has a minimum HR requirement, and you won’t be able to participate in any hunts that are above your level.
What Is The Difference Between Low Rank And High Rank?
Monster Hunter Wilds’ campaign is divided into two halves, Low Rank and High Rank. Low Rank is centered around Wilds’ main story, and your HR will automatically increase as you complete each assigned mission. During Low Rank you’ll have access to Low Rank weapons and armor, and you’ll only encounter Low Rank monsters.
Once you’ve completed the Low Rank campaign you will then begin High Rank. In High Rank, your HR only increases when you earn experience by hunting monsters and completing quests. You also won’t be given new assigned missions automatically whenever you complete one.
Instead, you’ll only have access to new story missions once you’ve reached each mission’s minimum required HR. If you don’t have any missions to complete in High Rank, keep leveling up until you do.
High Rank has stronger versions of the Low Rank monsters, as well as new monsters and monster variants. You’ll also have access to high-rarity weapons and High Rank armor sets, which are much stronger and have a lot more variety compared to the Low Rank armor sets.
What’s The Best Way To Raise My Hunter Rank?
Any monsters you hunt or missions you complete in High Rank will reward you with experience points to increase your Hunter Rank. If there are any particular weapons or armor pieces you want to pursue, you can farm the monsters that drop those parts while earning XP toward your next HR.
If your goal is to simply raise your HR as quickly as possible so you can gain access to more monsters and campaign missions, you can quickly increase your HR by completing optional missions. NPCs in every region will have side quests available for you once you’ve finished the Low Rank campaign.
Since most of these missions involve hunting monsters, you’ll get a chunk of XP for the hunt, and then another chunk of XP for completing the mission. Hence, you’ll earn XP faster by completing missions rather than simply farming monsters for parts.
Side quests also have the additional benefit of rewarding you with new items and combat tools. At the end of many of the simplest optional quests, you’ll receive a cooking ingredient that can be used when cooking a meal to gain a variety of temporary boosts.
Side quests and trading are the best ways to get these special food items.
The side quests will also occasionally unlock new Hunting Assistants. These are NPC characters who will help you in the field when fighting monsters, either by attacking them or trapping them with special gadgets. Quests with NPC’s names like Smithy’s Seal of Quality and Werner’s Test Run will unlock new Hunting Assistants for you.
