Hitting the credits in Monster Hunter has always been just the beginning, and that’s not been changed in Monster Hunter Wilds. With Frenzied monsters, Great Hunts, and the endless grinding for the best fashion and endless materials, there is still plenty for you to do and discover. One of the more mysterious and equally important items are Hunter Symbols.

Monster Hunter Wilds Review: Don’t Think, Just Hunt
Monster Hunter Wilds is a more approachable, if slightly more mindless Monster Hunter.
These items can only be gained from very specific hunts and the game never strictly informs you about their existence, nor are they dropped from monsters themselves. Instead, you just have to get out there and do some of the hardest hunts if you really want to get your hands on the covetous Hunter Symbols.
What Are Hunter Symbols Used For?
There are three different Hunter Symbols you can acquire, all named in sequential order. They are the Hunter Symbol I, Hunter Symbol II, and Hunter Symbol III. As you can probably imply from that, Hunter Symbol I is the easiest to get and Hunter Symbol III the rarest. But what are they actually used for?
Like every material in Monster Hunter, they are used for crafting gear. Namely, they are needed to make the best gear in the game. Every Rarity Eight weapon needs some kind of Hunter Symbol, while many of the unique armour sets need a Hunter Symbol III as part of each item. As such, you have to really put the work in if you want the best-of-the-best gear.
How To Get Every Type Of Hunter Symbol
With the knowledge of what Hunter Symbols are used for, that makes the desire to own them all the stronger. In a rather paradoxical twist, you need to first do the high-level content to get the Hunter Symbols, so you can get even better gear to hunt those same strong monsters. It’s a funny system that also makes perfect sense.
And which hunts are they you need to do? Tempered Hunts are the only ones that drop Hunter Symbols, and they only drop at specific difficulties as well. Let’s check them out below.
Item |
Acquisition |
---|---|
Hunter Symbol I |
Five-star Tempered Hunts |
Hunter Symbol II |
Six-star Tempered Hunts |
Hunter Symbol III |
Seven-star and above Tempered Hunts |
If you come across a Tempered Monster in the world, but you’re not ready to fight it yet, you can create the quest by selecting the monster on the map and then choosing to save it as an Investigation.
Of course, most hunts for Tempered monsters are those spawned randomly by the game, so it’s best to be proactive in doing these hunts so you can rack up Hunter Symbols as quickly as possible. The main thing to keep in mind is that higher-difficult Tempered monsters won’t drop lower-level Hunter Symbols. A seven-star Tempered Monster will never drop a Hunter Symbol I or II. You need to hunt at the appropriate level to get the corresponding Hunter Symbol.
