Yes, we all love hunting our big monsters. There’s no thrill like chasing down a Rathalos and fighting it to the death. But Monster Hunter Wilds wants you to admire the small creatures that make up the Forbidden Lands. There is a seemingly endless amount of endemic life hiding in every nook and cranny.

Every Monster Hunter Game In Chronological Order
Monster Hunter continues to be well and alive after almost two decades. With so many titles, it can be confusing to know how to play them in order.
And now, after all our running around, we have reached the final Research Report. Samin has promised this is the final one, for real this time. The difficulty has fluctuated throughout these quests, with some creatures easier to find than others. But he really has left the hardest for last.
How To Start Samin’s Special Research Report
For the last time, really this time, head to the Base camp in the Windward Plains to find Dareel and Samin in the large research tent. WIth every other Research Report finished so far, including Dareel’s to find a Gillopod, you can chat with Samin. After a brief apology for using you to further his rivalry with Dareel, he will ask you to help him out with one final request.
The Sandstar. This one is a bit more specific, he claims, and will even offer you a bit more information than usual to help you in finding them. And you’ll need it.
Where To Find A Sandstar
The Sandstar only appears in the Windward Plains at nighttime. This means you are effectively on a time limit to find it, as it will run away into hiding the second the sun starts to rise. Make sure to start your hunt early in the night for the highest chance of spotting them.
You can change both the time-of-day and weather in your tent either at Base Camp or in a Pop-Up Camp.
Samin claims that it dashes across the sand, so this narrows it down to the desert section of the Windward Plains. This encompasses Areas 11, 13, and 15. It also glows, making it a bit easier to see as it moves at night. It’s also blue, which makes for a sharp contrast against the sandy dunes it speeds across.
We would recommend searching for it during the Fallow as the desert is darker in this weather condition, making the Sandstar’s glow stand out more clearly.
A tactic we found quite helpful to make the Sandstar spawn is to run all the way to Rey Dau’s nest and climb up the area with Wedge Beetles to the left. Climbing here then running back out to the desert seems to increase the chance of them spawning. They can appear across any of the large desert, so give a good run around to spot them.
Making the Sandstar spawn is just the first step. Finding them is hard enough with how low their spawn rate is, but catching them is a whole other challenge.
How To Catch A Sandstar
As Samin warns you when you talk to him, catching the Sandstar might be difficult. Those weren’t just hollow words. Not only is the Sandstar incredibly fast, it is also hilariously perceptive. Nothing you do will stop it from seeing ro hearing you. No matter how slow you walk, whether or not you wear the Ghillie Mantle. Nothing. You cannot catch-up to the Sandstar, nor can you avoid it hearing you.
So how are you meant to catch it then? If you chase it on your Seikret, it will eventually burrow into the ground and disappear. What you need to do, just like with the Balahara that roam this desert, is take out its hearing. You can do this with both Sonic Bombs and Shrieker Pods from the Baunos flying overhead.
Be careful not to hit the Sandstar with the Shrieker Pod and Sonic Bomb directly, as it may kill them.
If you fire off the Shrieker Pod or Sonic Bomb close enough, the Sandstar will fall over and start wriggling on the ground. This is your opportunity to run in quick and pick them up in the Capture Net. You don’t have very long here, so try to be quick while they’re down, as they’ll burrow away once they regain their hearing.
And that, finally, is the rarest of all the endemic life catalog. Samin is incredibly grateful for your help, and offers you five Wild Herbs and ten batches of Honey as a reward, which honestly seems a bit paltry compared to the effort it took. But at least you can take solace in the fact that, finally, you are free of Dareel and Samin’s quarreling.
