Nu Udra is a giant flaming octopus from your nightmares.

During your exploration of the Ruins of Wyveria, you’ll get snatched by a creepy smiling monster, and before you can react, a fight against this shady monster will ensue. Here’s all you need to know about Xu Wu, and how to defeat it.

Xu Wu – Strengths And Weaknesses

Weak Points

  • Head (Breakable)
  • Mouth (Breakable)

Resistant Points

  • Tentacle (Severable)
  • Torso
  • Membrane

Elemental/Ailment Weakness

Elemental/Ailment Resistance

Immune to Dragon-type Damage

Best Weapon Damage

  • Slashing
  • Bludgeoning
  • Piercing

While Xu Wu is weak enough to any kind of weapon damage, you must always aim for its head and mouth, as its tentacles, membrane, and torso prove to be too resistant. To inflict the most possible damage, go with either Ice or Poison weapons, and steer clear of Dragon-type weapons, as those won’t do anything to it.

Best Equipment To Fight Xu Wu

Best Recommended Weapons

  • Death Venom Hammer (Hammer – Gypceros)
  • Windclaw Kiribami (Long Sword – Hirabami)
  • Buster Blaster (Heavy Bowgun – Nerscylla)

Best Recommended Armor

  • Guardian Ebony
  • Guardian Doshaguma

While we include the maximum upgrades of each weapon we recommend, remember that any stage of those weapon’s lines will work.

This monster is weak to all kinds of weapon damage, so the best weapons are the ones that can inflict Poison, Ice, or even better, both types of elemental damage. For This reason, the Death Venom Hammer and the Windclaw Kiribami are great choices, but the Buster Blaster, a Heavy Bowgun capable of using both elements, might be the best one.

On the defensive side, the best choice of armor is by far the Guardian Ebony set, from the Guardian Ebony Odogaron. Not only does this armor set bolster good general Defense, but since Xu Wu doesn’t attack using any element, you can afford to concentrate on offensive skills within your armor of choice; for that very reason, having Burst, Divine Blessing, and Earplugs sounds like a great choice.

And if you don’t want to bother yourself with hunting multiple Odogaron, then you can go with the Guardian Doshaguma set, which has great skills that help your defense, stamina recovery, and stamina depletion.

Xu Wu – Fight Breakdown And Moves

Xu Wu creepily standing alone in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Xu Wu will remind you of Nu Udra, but unlike the former one, this is a significantly faster enemy; whenever it feels too cornered, it will quickly dig underground and pop out of the ground in a safer corner of the arena where the fight is happening. Its tentacles are also different, as Xu Wu won’t use them to reach out or grab you, and instead, it will pop some scales out their tips and either use them as swords or shoot them in a circle. These hurt, so avoid getting hit by them.

You must also keep in mind one thing; its mouth is not what you think it is; what looks to be a smile is just the torso of this monster, and it’s quite resistant, so your attacks won’t do too much. To hit its proper weak point, you must aim for the top of its head, where its real mouth is. Do not get too comfortable, however, as its mouth is also its greatest weapon.

If you see it moving at a weird angle, it might be about to tackle you by turning backward until it looks like a spikey medusa, using its mouth up front and hitting you quite hard. Just stay on your toes, be careful, and it should be done soon.
