How Do Himiko’s Attributes Work?
The +20 percent Culture boost at the cost of -10 percent Science is a pretty big deal on its own, but doubling both parameters during Celebrations really goes to show how integral it all is to Himiko, High Shaman’s playstyle.
With the Happiness Building Production boost and increases in base Happiness from those Buildings, you’re going to be hitting Celebrations quite frequently, too, which means your Culture will be consistently sky-high, but your Science will be frequently diminished.
- Embrace The Pro And Con – You’re not going to want to work against your own Celebrations. Treat this as a +40 percent Culture boost and -20 percent Science boost as a rule, because it’ll often be true; and emphasize government choices which offer a Culture boost choice during Celebrations to make it even more pronounced.
- Maintain Science Buildings – Just because Himiko can dominate the Civic Tree doesn’t mean she can get by without making much progress on the Science front. You don’t want to plan your overall strategy around Science, of course, but make certain that all your Cities have Libraries and their subsequent Science Buildings, because you will need to maintain a passable Science output.
What Civs Work Best With Himiko, High Shaman?
Himiko, High Shaman is a culture queen who absolutely needs a civ that’s going to increase her Civic-learning speed even more swiftly than her base boost and Celebration uptick provide, if you’re going to progress your strategy per her inherent merits.
Any civ with tangible ways to benefit Himiko’s already-high Culture output is a solid choice, but there are some particular winners.

Rome is a pretty good pick, too. +1 Culture on the Capital and City Centers in Towns does add up, and you’ll get synergistic Happiness and Culture boosts via the Forum unique District and the Temple of Jupiter unique Building therein. The Basilica, Rome’s other unique Building, grants a bonus to Influence – again, a nice blend for pulling in City-States who can potentially help out with Science (and other fare). |
