Summary

  • Limited Run Games will be releasing the Gex Trilogy in Summer 2025 on various platforms.
  • Gex Trilogy includes three original games with widescreen support.
  • There will be physical and digital editions available for purchase.

Limited Run Games’ upcoming Gex Trilogy release window has been set for Summer 2025. Originally released on the PlayStation and Nintendo 64, the Gex series has been dormant for years. However, a new generation of fans will soon be able to experience this cult classic franchise, thanks to Limited Run Games.

Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix teamed up to release the original Gex games in the mid-1990s, a golden age for 3D platformers. The series follows the titular main character Gex, a sarcastic, wise-cracking gecko with a love for 70s pop-culture references. These references extended into the gameplay, as Gex would enter a variety of TV shows, collecting TV remotes to defeat his rival Rez. Today, the series still carries a cult following due to its unique place in gaming history. However, fans of the Gex series have faded over the years due to a lack of support for the series, with some labeling Gex himself an irrelevant gaming mascot.

The Limited Run Games YouTube account recently posted a video sharing the Summer 2025 release window for the Gex Trilogy. This will be the first release in the Gex franchise for quite some time, with Square Enix renewing the Gex trademark for the game’s release. Gex Trilogy is set to release on a variety of platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. Limited Run Games will be handling the physical distribution of the release with platforms to be announced soon.

What Is Included in the Gex Trilogy?

In addition to the release window, the trailer also featured footage of the new native widescreen support. Other than this, the Gex Trilogy includes Crystal Dynamic’s original three games: Gex, Gex: Enter the Gecko, and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. Each title brought its own unique flavor to the series, from the 2D platforming of the first game to the 3D exploration of its sequels. Limited Run Games has yet to reveal any other additional changes to the collection. However, the inclusion of widescreen support suggests that the trilogy will receive some level of enhancement for modern platforms. Limited Run Games is known for its work on collections such as the Gex Trilogy, with Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection also set to release this year.

Limited Run Games has a long track record of reviving old game releases, such as the recently announced Virtua Fighter 2 physical release. The Gex Trilogy is one of the more anticipated classic rereleases, with many hoping it could reignite the interest needed to revitalize the franchise.
