Could Doctor Doom Kill Thanos In Avengers: Doomsday?
Fans have been doing a lot of speculating about which Marvel characters could end up making a cameo appearance in Avengers: Doomsday. The Russo Brothers have teased that everyone is available from Marvel’s library of characters, and that’s an exciting prospect within itself. However, the focus for many people has been on which heroes might pop up from the multiverse and not the possibility of some former villains making their return, too. After all, they could just as easily slip through the multiverse either to help Doctor Doom or to simply add to the carnage. Notable scooper MyTimeToShineHello has claimed that Thanos will be returning to the MCU sooner than most people expect, which has led to a lot of people speculating he will turn up in Avengers: Doomsday, which will release on May 1, 2026.
That has led people to believe that Doctor Doom will kill Thanos, who will be turning up from a different timeline. The idea behind this would be that it establishes just how strong Doom is as a character, as audiences are aware of how much effort the Avengers had to put into defeating Thanos in the first place. There is precedent for this to happen from the 2015 Secret Wars comic book story, where Doom ends up ripping out Thanos’ skeleton, and seeing that happen on the big screen would certainly stun fans.
Doctor Doom Would Benefit From Killing A Hero In Avengers: Doomsday
The idea of having Downey Jr’s character kill a significant character early in Avengers: Doomsday is bright. It would help to establish the power and the violence that Doom can provide while also trying to make people see Downey Jr. as a villain after so many years of him being one of the most popular actors in the MCU. However, seeing him kill Thanos with ease wouldn’t necessarily achieve that. Thanos was a genuine villain who audiences despised due to how well he was written, and fans actively wanted to see him defeated by the Avengers.
Therefore, it’s more likely that people will like Doom if he kills Thanos again, which isn’t the result that Marvel Studios wants to have.
Instead, it would make more sense for Doom to kill one of the major heroes in the MCU and start the film with a bang. Audiences could be lulled into a false sense of security if it seems like Doom is going to be charming and similar to Tony Stark, only for him to then kill someone. There are tons of MCU stars rumored to be in this movie; therefore, finding one for Doom to kill wouldn’t be that complex, and this would have a more significant impact on Doom’s character.
Thanos Should Be Left Out Of Avengers: Doomsday To Preserve His Legacy
Bringing Thanos back to the MCU so soon is something that could be a risk that is not worth taking, regardless of what Marvel Studios plans to do with him during the movie. Thanos is the MCU’s greatest villain at this point due to the legitimate threat he caused and the long-term build-up that Marvel Studios gave the character. He delivered on his promise in Avengers: Infinity War, and the idea of throwing him in as a cameo for Avengers: Doomsday doesn’t seem to provide much benefit. There are other ways to help Doom as a character without diminishing Thanos.
Marvel Studios put in so much work to make Thanos an iconic villain, not just in the MCU but in cinematic history. That’s how good the character was; therefore, deciding to bring him back just to kill him again would feel like a strange decision. It would also seriously weaken how the Avengers look and the ultimate sacrifice that Iron Man made to make their victory over Thanos a reality. It took every single hero available in the MCU to defeat Thanos; therefore, having just one character achieve it wouldn’t help the main characters, while it would also set Doom up to be almost impossible to defeat if he was put a level above Thanos in Avengers: Doomsday.
