Summary

  • The Walking Dead producer wants to explore more global locations in spinoffs, such as Tokyo, Africa, and Iceland.
  • Gimple hints at expanding Daryl Dixon’s universe and introducing other characters to witness zombie infestations worldwide.
  • The Walking Dead’s future looks promising with new projects on the horizon despite spinoffs like Dead City and Daryl Dixon returning.

Even though The Walking Dead shut its gates on November 20, 2022, its post-apocalyptic narrative and zombie-infested world lives on with many of its spinoffs, and it seems as though the show’s producer wants to explore even more country locations down the line. Created by Robert Kirkman and cartoonist Tony Moore in 2003, the pair had no idea that the comic world of Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes was going to have such an impact. From graphic novels, TV shows, and video games, the lore of The Walking Dead not only brought its compelling and tragic stories to a greater audience but also shaped how zombies were viewed.

Although terrifying to actually think about it happening in the real world, people have a fascination with the undead and the end of civilization, and even though The Walking Dead tapped into that morbid human curiosity, the genre originated in the 1968 American horror film Night of the Living Dead, which was directed by the legendary George A. Romero, who took inspiration from the 1954 novel, I Am Legend. Now, many years later, The Walking Dead universe shows no signs of slowing down and has plans to extend its zombie apocalypse into even more global locations.

Speaking to ScreenRant at the Multicon LA Wildfire Benefit, The Walking Dead producer, Scott Gimple, opened up about his desire to take the post-apocalyptic franchise to more international locations across the globe. “There’s one that we’re working on that I’m very, very excited to see that we’ve never been before. But I’d also love to see it in Tokyo, I would love to see it in Africa, and I would love to see it in Iceland. I know that’s a weird one, but we want to spam the globe because there’s stories all over the globe,” said Gimple.

Gimple touched upon Daryl Dixon’s show, teasing that he’d like to expand that universe too, as well as wanting to introduce other Walking Dead characters so that they could experience the zombie infestation in other parts of the world in a bid to witness how they would handle the situation. “It’s so integral to Daryl Dixon’s story, but even beyond that, we want to go [more places]. We want to see other characters throughout the world, and how they’re faring. And we have had a lot of experiments on that. We’ve actually done really cool stories towards that, but they just haven’t come to fruition for this reason or that. But I will say that by doing them, I’ve essentially seen those shows in my brain, and I really like them.”

The notion of Gimple teasing an “exciting” new project is enough to get most fans elated about The Walking Dead‘s future, even though Dead City and Daryl Dixon are making a highly anticipated return this year. In Daryl Dixon season 1, the skilled tracker has already explored some of France, with season 3 looking to venture into Spain, while Maggie and Negan are stuck in an undead New York, so expanding TWD’s universe would not only open up a slew of new stories and characters but also take Kirkman’s humble comic book beginnings to places he never dreamt it would go.

The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 premieres on May 4 on AMC and AMC+, while Season 3 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will premiere sometime in 2025.
