Warning: The following contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Daima, Episode 19, “Betrayal”, now streaming on Crunchyroll.

The Demon Realm’s Eternal Dragon has finally been awakened from his slumber in Dragon Ball Daima. After a long and difficult journey across the Demon Realm, fighting Tamagami, sea monsters, giants, and all sorts of other powerful, wacky beings, the three Dragon Balls have come together, and the chant has been recited.

In a surprise twist though, it wasn’t Goku or anyone else from the Dragon Team that got to summon the Eternal Dragon; it was Glorio under the orders of his employer, Arinsu. Glorio’s betrayal has been a long time coming and has been hinted at ever since Dragon Ball Daima episode 1, “Conspiracy”, where he was shown hiding in the shadows of Gomah’s palace. The Supreme Kai was even constantly wary of Glorio and always reminded Goku never to trust him fully. Having learned the Namekian language just for this exact moment, Glorio recited the chant to summon the dragon, and the original Porunga made his grand entrance.

“Brave soul who has gathered the Dragon Balls…Come, speak your wish. I shall grant any wish!” – Demon Realm Porunga

Dragon Ball: The Fusion In Daima’s Finale, Explained

Fusion is an aspect that has been notably missing from Daima, but here’s a look at the fusion that likely awaits in the finale!

Demon Realm Porunga

The Namekian Dragon’s Older Cousin

Visually speaking, Demon Realm Porunga looks exactly like the Porunga seen in Dragon Ball Z‘s Namek Saga. The only difference is that Demon Realm Porunga is red with yellow eyes and a blue outline separating his red outer scales from his beige skin. Demon Realm Porunga also seems to be larger than normal Porunga, as Super Giant-Form Gomah was only shown to be as big as his hand. However, it should be noted that the Eternal Dragons change sizes all the time.

The appearance isn’t the only difference between the two Porungas. The Demon Realm’s Porunga can only grant one wish upon being summoned, unlike the Namekians’ dragon, who could grant three at a time. It hasn’t been explicitly stated, but this could be because the Demon Realm only has a set of three Dragon Balls, which would make them technically easier to collect. You might think that’s not exactly the case because of the Tamagami, but remember that they weren’t created alongside the Dragon Balls. Neva only made them once he saw that his Dragon Balls were always being used by evil people for their selfish desires. So, before the Tamagami came into being, it must have been ridiculously easy for someone like the Supreme Demon King or someone else with power to go and collect only three balls.

Demon Realm Porunga Can Defend Himself

A Dragon Fighting Back

Demon Realm Porunga stopping Gomah in Dragon Ball DAIMA

In a scene made to show viewers how powerful Demon Realm Porunga is, Gomah charges at him to try and prevent a wish from being granted. Unfortunately for King Gomah, Demon Realm Porunga literally just flicks him with his fingers and sends him flying with little effort. It’s a cool scene, but to some eagle-eyed watchers, it’s also a callback to how regular Porunga makes the “OK” sign when granting wishes.

It’s not often that you get to see an Eternal Dragon getting some action, and actually, Demon Realm Porunga might be an oddity in how he can defend himself. In Dragon Ball episode 112, “King Piccolo’s Wish”, Demon King Piccolo fires a Mouth Energy Wave at Shenron after making his wish. Not only did Shenron not deflect Piccolo’s attack, but he was outright killed by it. And as you could probably guess, Demon King Piccolo is nowhere even near King Gomah’s power level, so maybe Shenron simply wasn’t designed to fight back for whatever reason.

Is The Demon Realm’s Eternal Dragon Lore-Breaking?

Aren’t the Eternal Dragons Only Supposed to Be as Strong as Their Creator?

Goku and Piccolo in Dragon Ball DAIMA when Demon Realm Porunga is summoned

Some fans might think that because Demon Realm Porunga could somehow swat Third Eye Gomah like a fly, wouldn’t that make Neva just as strong? There is a common misconception of Eternal Dragons being equal in strength to their creator, but that’s only partially true. There are things that Eternal Dragons can do that their creators simply cannot. Kami can’t bring people back from the dead, give someone eternal youth, or even spawn a pair of panties. On the other hand, there are some things that Shenron couldn’t do on his own, such as beating Demon King Piccolo, even though Kami was stated to be stronger than him.

Eternal Dragons aren’t as physically powerful as their creator; it’s simply their wish-granting power that’s based on their creator. Their wishes cannot influence beings stronger than their creators unless that person allows them to. For example, you can’t ask Shenron for the deaths of the Saiyans since Kami is weaker than them. This is also why Goku could refuse the wish to send him to Earth at the end of the Namek Saga.

As for the Eternal Dragons’ physical strength, it’s unknown what factors affect that. Maybe it’s random? It’s not often that the dragons get attacked anyway, so maybe Demon Realm Porunga is luckily just that strong, and Shenron isn’t.
