Summary
- Pokemon Champions was just announced at Pokemon Presents today.
- The battle-focused online game seems prime to have a National Dex since it’s not a mainline game.
- That won’t be the case at launch, but more Pokemon will be added over time.
In news that should probably surprise no one but will inevitably annoy plenty, Pokemon Champions has been confirmed not to have the full National Dex at launch.
Whenever a new Pokemon game is announced, no matter how exciting or evolutionary for the series it looks, there’s one big question that’s bound to be asked and answered nearly straight away – will it have the National Pokedex? With the series spanning so many games and, more importantly, Pokemon, fans are always wondering if we’ll get to see them all in each new release.
For those lucky enough to be unaware, the National Pokedex (or Dex if you’re cool) basically means every Pokemon under the sun, instead of the Regional Dex that applies to each specific game.

Considering how much “catch ’em all” means to Pokemon as a whole, it’s not a surprise that fans want as many of the ‘Mons in the game as possible. That being said, the answer is almost always never what anyone wants to hear, leading to some inevitable disappointment that’s likely about to hit the latest revealed game, Pokemon Champions.
No, Pokemon Champions Won’t Have The National Pokedex At Launch
Following the announcement of Pokemon Champions at Pokemon Presents today, one of the big questions that everyone wanted to know is whether it’ll feature the National Dex or a more limited selection. After all, it’s a game focused entirely on battling with no specific region in mind, so it would make perfect sense on paper. That’s not the reality, though.
As reported by Serebii.net, Pokemon Champions isn’t going to include every Pokemon at launch and will only feature Pokemon Home compatibility if they feature in the game. This suggests the selection could be fairly limited when Champions releases, but will surely grow over time as more ‘Mons are added, similarly to Unite.
It has been confirmed that, at time of release, not all Pokémon will be available to use in Pokémon Champions. Pokémon can only be sent from Pokémon HOME to Pokémon Champions if they appear in the game – Serebii.net
The Pokemon Company haven’t said much about how far they’re going with the Pokedex in Champions, but it does seem like the game is being primed as the new competitive scene for Pokemon instead of the mainline titles. That won’t be the case at launch with so many Pokemon missing, but it’ll hopefully get there over time.
