In an exciting announcement for Terminator fans, a new side-scrolling action game called Terminator 2D: No Fate has been confirmed for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, with a release date of September 5, 2025. Developed by UK-based Bitmap Bureau, the forthcoming Terminator game is set to be the latest addition to the highly popular movie franchise’s catalog of various media adaptations.

There are not many films that hold as much significance for their genre as 1984’s The Terminator does for science fiction movies. Since the original’s release, the sci-fi action series has spawned five additional follow-up movies and has also transcended into other mediums, including novels and video games. From receiving its own games to making crossover appearances in third-party titles, the Terminator IP has been put to use in different ways by game developers. In one of the newest cases, the franchise is set to get a retro-themed game inspired by one of the early movies under the sci-fi brand.

The Terminator is Having a Bit of a Gaming Moment

The Terminator is still a pretty prominent franchise in the world of action cinema, and it’s having a bit of a moment in the gaming industry.

Reef Entertainment, a British game publisher, recently announced Terminator 2D: No Fate for a September 5 launch across Steam, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch, Steam, and Epic Games Store. The latest Terminator game is a 2D title—as the name suggests—which features a pixel-based art style similar to ’90s arcade games. Players can take control of Sarah Connor, John Connor, and T-800 as they go up against T-1000 as well as a range of other enemies from the Terminator lore. Talking about the project, Bitmap Bureau Design Director Mike Tucker labeled No Fate as “a love letter to ‘80s/‘90s arcade games” and said that the driving force behind the project was to “create the T2 side-scroller we should have had in our youth” in a PS Blog post.

Terminator 2D: No Fate Revealed for a 2025 Release

Terminator 2D: No Fate‘s story is inspired by the 1991 film Terminator 2: Judgment Day and presents some of its “classic” moments along with other “untold Terminator stories.” Another interesting thing to note here is that the game’s soundtrack also harkens back to the music featured in the sequel. Talking about the parallels between No Fate and T2, Tucker said that the missions “retell” the movie’s events while simultaneously “expanding its narrative.”

Luckily for the fans, Terminator 2D: No Fate isn’t the only game in the sci-fi franchise scheduled to hit the shelves in 2025. That’s because the open-world Terminator: Survivors game, which was first confirmed in 2022, is currently in the works at Nacon. However, after missing its planned release last year, when exactly this game may release is anyone’s guess right now.
