How To Beat Quematrice In Monster Hunter Wilds

There are a lot of monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds, and there’s no denying that there are quite a few weird ones as well. Yet there is something about Quematrice, an oversized rooster with mastery over fire, that feels so mundanely humorous. It isn’t obscenely extravagant, it’s just a funny combination.

Even funnier, they are a dramatic difficulty jump over the early Chatacabra, and can really give you some trouble, especially if you rely on an melee weapon with short-range to fight them. Not to worry though, you will have this chicken cut down to size in no time, with plenty of heat left over to cook them.

Quematrice – Strengths And Weaknesses

Quematrice is a tall, bipedal monster so short-ranged weapons will be restricted to hacking away at their lower sections. Thankfully, Quematrice leans down to peck quite frequently, giving you plenty of chance to hit their head and upper body. This is important because their neck is the weakest part of their body.

Here are the rest of their weaknesses and strengths:

  • Weak Point – Neck
  • Elemental/Ailment Weaknesses – Water, Paralysis, Poison
  • Elemental/Ailment Strengths – Fire
  • Best Weapon Damage – Most weapons deal similar damage, though Severing is slightly more powerful.

Quematrice, being so fueled by fire itself, is then of course very resistant to fire. Conversely, they are weak to water, though not quite to the degree you would hope. Their tail and head are the weakest to water, and the weakest parts in general, so this is where to aim for when taking them on. Plenty of ailments are effective against them too, with Paralysis feeling particularly helpful.

Best Equipment To Fight Quematrice

a hunter wearing the bone armour in monster hunter wilds.

With Quematrice relying on fire quite heavily, you’ll want some good fire resistance going into any encounter with them. That said, they have a good variety of moves that are purely physical as well, so don’t skimp on your defense values either.

In the early game where you will be facing Quematrice the most, we would recommend picking up the Bone set to give you some extra fire resistance and a nice defense boost on top. There aren’t many Water-elemental weapons this early unless you go out of your way to hunt down some Balahara, so any early-game weapon can be useful here.

Quematrice – Fight Breakdown And Moves

Quematrice isn’t the most complex monsters, though they can swap up their attacks quite easily and pull off many of them quite quickly as well. Here’s a quick look at each of them, and the best way to avoid them:

Move

Description

Counter

Peck

Quematrice pecks in front of them, and can do it multiple times in a row.

Simply step out of the way, and punish them during the lengthy animation.

Fire Tail Whip

When you are by Quematrice’s side or behind, they will swipe their tail followed by a burst of flame.

Dodge towards Quematrice’s head to escape the trail of fire. Dodging away can work, but you can still get hit if you don’t move far enough away.

Running Tail Spin

Quematrice quickly runs towards you and spins with their tail at the last second, unleashing a torrent of flame.

The range on this one is shorter, so dodge further away when you see them coming to a stop to avoid this.

Bite

Quematrice will reel back and quickly bite in front of them. They can also potentially lunge to the left and right with this attack as well.

Like the peck, move to the side they aren’t biting in and punish them afterwards.

Fanned Flame

Quematrice stands up tall and spreads a flammable liquid before igniting it a moment later. This burst of flame is larger than others and deals more damage.

This attack is harder to avoid, but easier to punish. When you see Quematrice standing up tall, move away from where they’re looking and attack them.

Its physical attacks aren’t too threatening and can be be powered through with a heavy enough weapon, though the fire attacks are a very different story. They have quite powerful knockback and can deal pretty high damage if you aren’t working to avoid them. Remember that the tail swipe and the burst of flame are two separate attacks, and it is quite easy to get hit by both of them at the same time.

A helpful tip – because Quematrice has to spread a flammable liquid for their attacks, they simply cannot use any fire attacks while in a body of water because they cannot ignite it.

Quematrice – Drops And Materials

Quematrice has a decent few materials it can drop, and while none of them are particularly rare, some require a bit more precise targeting to get what you want. Here is each of them:
