How To Beat Guardian Ebony Odogaron In Monster Hunter Wilds

Monster Hunter has always had more than just the default versions of monsters. Whether there are Apex versions, subspecies, Risen, and so on, there are countless versions of so many of these iconic monsters. And Monster Hunter Wilds introduces its own new variant in the Guardian Monsters.

Every Monster Hunter Game In Chronological Order

Monster Hunter continues to be well and alive after almost two decades. With so many titles, it can be confusing to know how to play them in order.

These monsters function in a unique way, taking advantage of the environment in Wyveria while featuring expanded abilities from their original versions. Guardian Ebony Odogaron is one of the fastest of these monsters, and can prove troublesome if you’re not careful. Let’s discuss everything there is to know about them, and how to defeat them.

Guardian Ebony Odogaron – Strengths And Weaknesses

Guardian Monsters have a few unique aspects to them. For one, they don’t get exhausted since they don’t need sustenance, and so they can keep fighting at full strength throughout the whole fight. On top of that, their Wounds heal over time, and especially quickly when they are standing in a pool of Wylkcrystals. As such, it is important to be proactive when facing them because they won’t tire out until they are dead.

In the case of Ebony Odogaron, they are exceptionally fast as well, making their Wounds harder to hit with how fast they move. Graciously, they have quite a few breakable parts to limit their moves, and a few key weaknesses you can take advantage of.

Weak Point – Forelegs.
Elemental/Ailment Weaknesses – Water, Paralysis.
Elemental/Ailment Strengths – Dragon, Exhaust.
Best Weapon Damage – All viable, though Blunt damage excels somewhat.

Be careful of being hit directly, as you will be inflicted with Dragonblight, which temporarily changes your damage type to the Dragon Element.

Dragon is easily the strongest resistance Odogaron has, though they don’t have immunity to any damage type, giving you a great degree of freedom. The same is true when it comes to status effects. While Paralysis is the most effective, Exhauation is the only one tey are fully immune to, meaning you can still take advantage of effects like Poison and Blast.

Taking out Odogaron’s tail is one of the strongest strategies you have. Many of their attacks rely on their tail, and with it gone the range and strength of most of their attacks is reduced dramatically.

Best Equipment To Fight Guardian Ebony Odogaron

When battling the Guardians, this will be one of your first introductions to enemies using the Dragon element, and as such there isn’t exactly a large number of armour sets that grant you that kind of resistance set. That said, you do fight both Guardian Doshaguma and Guardian Rathalos before this, and the armour of the former has the highest Dragon Resistance at this point in the game.

In terms of weapons, the Water element is the way to go. There are a few options across all the weapons here, though Balahara and Uth Duna are the most widely available ones to aim for.

Guardian Ebony Odogaron – Fight Breakdown And Moves

Guardian Ebony Odogaron is the perfect predator and watchdog. They can fight with immense speed, making slow weapons hard to utilise against them. They can also knock you away with speedy attacks and can close the gap on you in the blink of an eye. They have great strength and speed, and their numerous weaknesses in terms of elements and ailments are your only saving grace. Aiming for the forelegs and tail will limit much of their moveset though.

Move	Description	Counter
Chomp	Odogaron opens their mouth before lunging at the player.	There’s a long wind-up to this attack, so avoid it at it charges and punish during the recovery period.
Slash Combo	Odogaron slashes in front of themself quickly with a claw, potentially a second time. Occassionally, they will then stand up and slam with both claws for high damage and knockback.	The slashes are easy enough to avoid, though be wary not to attack until you are certain the combo is complete. The slam gives much more time to punish.
Tail Whip	Odogaron takes a quick leap forward to whip the player with their tail before jumping backwards.	This attack pulls off quickly, so dodging forward or blocking it is the most effective strategy.
Tail Swipe	Odogaron does a quick tail swipe behind themself that knocks down anyone in range for small damage.	Be mindful not to stay behind Odogaron for too long to avoid this. The attack can also be powered through during some heavier attacks.
Tail Whirlwind	Odogaron preps and then does a spin, attacking everyone in a circle around them for decent damage and knocking them away.	If you see Odogaron standig still for too long, step away to avoid this attack unless you’re confident in your dodging and blocking.
Wylkcrystal Slam	When by a pool of Wylkcrystals, Odogaron may perform their slam combo, which will cause a massive explosion all around them with Dragon element.	If you see Odogaron performing the slam attack, get your distance. Being near them at all during this will catch you in the blast.

Odogaron relies on their speed and tail to keep up their damage output, but their weaknesses just as easily let you overwhelm them. With properly timed Offset Attacks, you can easily stun Odogaron, giving you time to break their tail and, ideally, sever it. The benefit to heavier weapons here is that they can charge right through lots of Odogaron’s weaker moves to keep up the offensive.

Guardian Ebony Odogaron – Drops And Materials

For the most part, Odogaron retains most of the same materials across both Low and High Rank, though they do gain a few brand-new items beyond just old materials upgraded. However, the drop rate on each respective piece remains mostly the same, and the new materials can be gained from multiple sources anyway. The tail still remains the target in terms of materials though, with both the Plate and Gem having the highest drop rate from the severed tail.

Odogaron is one of the few Guardian that still drops Nourishing Extract in High Rank.

Odogaron comes with quite a few potential materials, a mix of both their own unique materials, and those that are shared across all Guardians, such as Nourishing Extract and Scales. These are all gained from Wounds and Target Rewards though, meaning you don’t have to work too hard to get these materials. They’ll just drop naturally.
