Command and Conquer series gets huge update, as EA releases original source code

15 years since Tiberian Twilight. If you’re a long-time fan of Westwood and EA’s seminal RTS game series, it’s understandable, of course, to feel like hope is lost. But all of a sudden, like netrunner dancing through the web of cyberspace, the Command and Conquer series has been officially revitalized. After 2020’s C&C Remastered, and the shift to Steam last year thanks to the Ultimate Collection, EA has just officially dropped the source code for Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert, and dozens of other Command and Conquer games, while bulking out the mod support for the entire series. Whether you love Kane’s Wrath, Generals, Red Alert 3, or Zero Hour, it’s clear to see the camera is still running.

Working in collaboration with Command and Conquer modder and community legend Luke ‘CCHyper’ Feenan, EA has released a variety of new material for the legendary RTS game. First up, the fully recovered source code for Tiberian Dawn (aka, Command and Conquer 1995), Red Alert, Renegade, Generals, and C&C Zero Hour is now freely available under general public license. That gives modders and map makers complete rein to get under the games’ respective hoods and create whatever they like.

On that note, EA has added complete Steam Workshop support for Command and Conquer Renegade, C&C Generals, Zero Hour, Tiberium Wars, Kane’s Wrath, Red Alert 3, Uprising, and C&C 4. All the mission editor and world builder tools have been updated, allowing players to publish custom maps to Steam Workshop directly. There is also a new Command and Conquer modding support pack, which contains all of the Xml, Schema, Script, Shader, and map files for all the games that use SAGE (Strategy Action Game Engine).

All the source code has been shared via GitHub, and you can find it here. Likewise, the complete Command and Conquer modding guide is also available now.

Otherwise, you might want to try some of the other best strategy games, or maybe the best grand strategy games ever made.
