Blizzard finally addresses Diablo 4 fans’ frequent requests for a loot filter

Diablo 4 can be a hell of a lot of fun, but with so many monsters to slaughter, characters tend to end up with an awful lot of loot. That’s why players have taken to requesting that developer Blizzard add a loot filtering option, as in Path of Exile. Now, Blizzard has finally broken its silence on the issue.

Sick of all the loot you stumble across in Diablo 4? Bored with picking through items and wish this online RPG would let you ignore the junk? That’s where a loot filter would come in handy, letting you concentrate on the good stuff, the items you can actually make serious use of.

Path of Exile supports loot filters as part of the base game, and even allows players to create and import scripts to tweak their drops. So why not Diablo 4? Wander around the various Diablo 4 online boards, and you’ll see players imploring Blizzard to add such a feature.

However, if you’re among their number, I’ve got bad news – it’s not happening. Granted, Blizzard hasn’t said never, but in a recent Q&A the developer has all but quashed notions of Diablo 4 ever getting a loot filter.

Community manager Ruben Marquez, aka Bluddshed, sat down with game designer Ainslyn Hall and, alongside other questions, asked if a loot filter was on the cards. The answer, unfortunately, was no.

“The way that we think about loot is that we want you to basically use the whole animal,” she said. She went on to explain that Blizzard wants players to make use of the items that were dropped, whether that’s selling them or dismantling them. “We want you to be able to salvage them, for that to flow into the economy of how you’re interacting with systems.”

This seems like a step back from Blizzard’s earlier takes on loot filtering. Director Joel Shely previously suggested that loot filtering would happen, it was just a matter of when. Instead, it looks like Diablo 4 loot filtering will for now, remain a fantasy.
