A recent leak from Honkai: Star Rail is hinting at a brand-new way players will be able to pick up five-star characters, though it will require a steep investment. The sci-fi RPG from HoYoverse has typically locked its highest-rarity characters behind the game’s gacha system, though some special events have given out free units to fans. HoYoverse first gave out a free five-star character during the Version 1.6 update, with players receiving a free copy of new character Dr. Ratio. Now, fans may have another elusive way to pick up five-star roster members.
While five-star characters are often few and far-between from the gacha system, Honkai: Star Rail does offer some guarantees for players to pick up valuable units. The game’s “pity system” guarantees players will obtain a five-star unit every 90 pulls on the gacha, with the featured unit being guaranteed at a minimum of every 180 pulls. Players can also choose a free five-star unit from the standard rotation after their 300th pull on the permanent gacha banner. A rumored new system will look to benefit players obtaining extra five-star units.

A new leak shared by prominent HoYoverse leaker Sakura Haven is hinting at a new system for players to obtain five-star characters. According to the leak, the new system will benefit players pulling extra copies of maxed-out characters, granting a special currency to players pulling copies of characters already at E6. The currency will be used in a special shop, using 2 of the new tokens to choose a five-star unit from a limited selection of characters. The new currency and special five-star unit shop are expected to launch with Version 3.2, currently scheduled to release on April 8.
The new Honkai: Star Rail system will likely see limited applications from many players early on, only granting the special currency after completely maxing out the most valuable units. The currency will more likely see use from players who “miss the 50/50” fairly often, accruing extra copies of the game’s standard rotation of characters. The leak does also tease a similar system for Light Cones, with currency obtained from the premium Battle Pass and “alternative methods” and used at a 4-to-1 ratio.
