Scream is one of the most successful slashers and there are already multiple movies in the franchise, with the seventh one in the pipeline. Two major stars from the last installment left — Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. However, their absence was filled with the return of several Scream OGs, including Neve Campbell, Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley. However, the return of Lillard and Foley raised eyebrows since their characters were already dead. However, some argued that they weren’t sure about Lillard’s Stu’s fate. So, one fan shared a theory on how to make his character back with sense in Scream 7.

Scream fans shared their theories about the upcoming movie on Reddit. One shared the possibility of Stu being alive and how this can happen without ruining the whole story. According to the Reddit user ComfortableHall8887, Judy Hicks (Marley Shelton) was in their senior year alongside Stu (Lillard) and Billy (Skeet Ulrich). Judy and Sidney (Neve Campbell) acted in Peter Pan, where the former played the lost boy and the latter Tiger Lily. The user suggested that Judy may have resented Sidney after that. Judy was in love with Stu and was on the lookout when Stu and Billy attacked Sidney in Scream 1. She saw when Sidney threw a TV at Stu and later rescued the latter with Mickey (Timothy Olyphant), the secondary antagonist of Scream 2. Mickey and Judy saved Stu and killed another victim and crushed a TV on the latter to replace Stu. So when Sidney reported the incident to the police, it was as is — there were two bodies with one under the TV and they didn’t feel the need to identify the bodies.
Judy keeps Stu’s survival a secret. Then the duo agree for her to become a police officer to keep them up to date with what’s going on with Sidney while keeping them off the track of Stu. In Scream 3, she works with Roman Bridger (Scott Foley) to locate Sidney. In Scream 4, Judy keeps filling Stu with information about Sidney and in Scream 5, Judy becomes a Sheriff. However, she and her son Wes fall victim to crazed Ghostface fans. So, Stu loses his mind and without Judy filling her in, he turns to news. In Scream 6, he learns about Richie’s family dressing as Ghostface and he goes into a fit of rage because Judy and Wes are among the killers’ victims. Stu is having hallucinations and starts seeing the late individuals associated with him. Now, he wants to take his revenge on Sidney for destroying her life, disfiguring him, and keeping him in hiding.
The fan theory suggests a connection between Judy, Mickey and Stu. While the previous films don’t provide evidence linking the trio, there are lots of things going on that are not shown in the movies that could potentially explain how Stu survived after the events in the original film. Fan theories offer creative interpretations, but one should take them with a grain of salt. Stu’s return to the franchise has been confirmed, but it remains unclear how he will be introduced in Scream 7. And this makes sense to keep the element of surprise. Regardless, Lillard will reprise his role as Stu. One insider previously claimed that the production will use artificial intelligence (AI) to bring back the OG killers — Stu and Roman. However, the use of AI has still left the doors open to determine whether Lillard’s Stu is alive. So, fans should wait for Scream 7 to confirm if AI will bring him back to life or if it isn’t necessary because he is still alive.
Scream 7 will hit theaters on February 27, 2026.
