The masked men initially seemed to be affiliated with the Okutabi Lab, where Shin grew up. But it was soon revealed that they were just assassins who had forcibly taken control of the Lab for their personal gains. The group of assassins serves a reindeer masked man named Kashima who aims to use advanced technology instead of traditional guns and knives.

Guns and knives are things of the past.

We’d like to incorporate the newest tech in killing too.

The Okutabi Lad is an underground lab where Shin grew up. The lab is led by Asakura, who is Shin’s adoptive father and responsible for giving him his psychic powers. The psychic powers made people treat Shin differently, which made Asakura feel guilty and wish to turn him back to normal. But Shin decided to keep the powers and soon left the lab to pursue his career as an assassin.

The group wants hold of strong powers like Shin’s, hence they try to kidnap him. But instead, they mistakenly kidnapped Lu. When Sakamoto and Shin are in pursuit of saving Lu, the men try to catch Shin once again but fail. Eventually, Sakamoto and Shin track them down, defeat them, and rescue the Lab.

Shin’s Past, Explained

How Did Shin End Up at the Okutabi Lab?

Shin’s father, Ando, was close friends with Asakura. But one day he abruptly disappeared and left Shin in his care. Initially, he was unwilling to look after Shin and blamed Ando for leaving his son behind. But as time went on, he began to care for Shin. He blamed himself for accidentally giving Shin powers and felt guilty years later.

How Shin Got His Abilities?

Asakura was working endlessly on a research. As a result of his research, he created a mysterious potion which was accidentally drank by Shin because he was thirsty. This gave Shin the ability to read minds. Since he was a kid, he mindlessly announced others’ thoughts, which left others embarrassed and bothered. But Shin was rather proud of his abilities because it signified Asakura’s research was a success.

Did Shin Despise the Lab?

In Episode 7, Shin and Lu got into an argument, and Lu made remarks about Shin’s powers that hurt him. Shin, despite his kind and carefree attitude, is very conscious of his abilities. In the past, he was avoided by other researchers at the lab because his psychic powers made him creepy. But other than this incident, Shin had a positive image of the lab.

The thing is, they were a group of weirdos,

but they weren’t dangerous like that.

I wonder what happened…

He was surprised when “the Lab” kidnapped Lu because they were harmless to him when he was young. When he reunited with some of the researchers, the researchers were even apologetic for the past, but Shin did not seem to hold anything against them.

Years later, Shin came across his childhood memories again. While the researchers and Asakura felt guilty, Shin never held a grudge against them. Shin was able to defeat the assassins using his abilities. By doing this, he proved to the researchers that he had grown to accept his abilities. In his reunion with Asakura, he was also able to convey that Asakura’s research was indeed a success because Shin can now help others using it.
