Summary
- Dexter: Resurrection will follow events after New Blood with familiar faces returning.
- Original Sin characters could appear in Resurrection, adding depth to their stories.
- Using flashbacks to explore new characters’ 90s timeline in Resurrection can maintain suspense.
Filming is underway for Dexter: Resurrection ahead of its premiere this summer. The 10-episode sequel will take place immediately after the events of 2021’s limited series, New Blood. It’ll follow Dexter Morgan after he survived a gunshot wound to the chest, and it’ll see the return of legacy characters Angel Batista and Harrison and Harry Morgan. It’s unclear which other legacy characters might join them, but with Original Sin now being part of the Dexter-lore, the inclusion of a new character introduced in the prequel might be a fun and interesting twist.
Characters like Tanya Martin and Bobby Watt were introduced in Original Sin, and there could be a part for either a future version of them, or significant flashbacks to Dexter’s past. Of course, this would create a problem for the prequel series, as it would reveal the fate of the characters, but it would be a great way to create significant connective tissue between both shows.

Dexter Morgan is actually alive in Resurrection, and he’ll be joined by at least three other familiar faces. There is also a chance that Joey Quinn and Vince Masuka will return in the sequel series, with both characters still offering a lot to the story. New characters played by Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklage will also feature in the series, but hot off the heels of the success of Original Sin, it would be very interesting to see some of the newer faces in the Dexter-verse make appearances too. Sarah Michelle Gellar was criminally underused in Original Sin, and it would be fun to see her and Masuka turn up at a crime scene in Resurrection‘s timeline.
Alternatively, Dexter’s love interest, Sofia, could make a dramatic return in the future timeline to confess her undying loyalty to her first love. What about Bobby Watt? Harry Morgan‘s loyal colleague was another character underused in the prequel series. An older version of Bobby Watt could help fill in the blanks for Dexter, as he inevitably finds out more about his adoptive father.

Fans already know how it turned out for the younger version of the legacy characters who feature in Original Sin, so the stakes are already significantly lower. This is something all prequels have to navigate carefully, and this is often balanced out by the inclusion of new characters into the story to create suspense and mystery due to their outcomes being unknown. Original Sin is no exception to this rule, with the inclusion of several new characters. Having said that, one of the complaints many fans have had about the Dexter prequel series has been the lack of exploration of these newly introduced characters in Original Sin, so this does create the potential for adding to their stories by including them in Resurrection.
A clever way around this would be to feature flashbacks to the 90’s timeline in Resurrection that include revelations about the new characters that also feature in the 90s timeline. This would avoid revealing their fates, while still including them in the sequel series. Original Sin featured a crossover with Resurrection, in the form of a flashforward to Michael C. Hall’s Dexter fighting for his life in hospital. If Original Sin can feature a flashforward, Resurrection can most certainly manage a flashback or two.
