Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii players are more than a little confused by the game’s Minato Girls side quest, which features lengthy live-action scenes of Masaru trying to win over some girls.
If there’s one thing the Yakuza series has become known for over the years, it’s muscular men saying the deepest s**t you’ve ever heard before throwing their shirts into the air. If there’s another thing that Yakuza is known for, it’s the strange side quests that start off bizarre and then almost always have a surprisingly poignant and emotional ending.

At this point, there’s pretty much nothing that can surprise Yakuza fans. Grown men dressed up as babies who try to fight you? Been there. Helping two crabs find love in Hawaii? Pirate Yakuza’s latest strange sub-story might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, though.
Pirate Yakuza Players Love Masaru’s Weird IRL Dating Show Quest
Throughout most of the Like a Dragon games, RGG Studios has made a habit out of including some awkward live-action scenes, usually during side quests involving hostesses. If you’re familiar with the series, chances are you’ve come across a few sub-stories that make you feel like you’ve stumbled onto some weird website.
Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii takes things to a whole new level with its Minato Girls Ward side quest. Towards the midpoint of the game, Masaru, played by Ryuji Akiyama, drops a diary indicating he wants to date a Minato Girl, which eventually leads to Majima convincing them to give the chef a go.
Completing this quest results in nearly 30 minutes of live-action footage of Ryuji Akiyama comedically trying, and failing, to win the Minato Girls over. That’s right, instead of a few brief live-action scenes like in previous Yakuza games, you basically get a short film in Pirate Yakuza, which fans are both confused and surprisingly happy about.
It’s worth noting that Ryuji Akiyama is known for his comedic persona in real life, so it makes sense that RGG Studios would want to feature that somehow.
Over on the Like a Dragon subreddit, Redditor Baumhaus1 asked why there’s a “RL dating show in my pirate game”, which was followed up by other players sharing their bemusement. While many think that it’s “cringe” and far too long, there’s a lot of praise too, as most fans agree that it’s a step up from the “uncomfortable” live-action scenes in previous games.
