League of Legends Hextech Chests Are Making a Comeback

Summary

  • Riot Games is bringing back Hextech Chests to League of Legends with the launch of Act 2 next week.
  • The new Hextech Chest system will feature eight chests within the battle pass, with more coming through the honor system.
  • The initial removal of Hextech Chests saw public outcry from fans with some even boycotting the game entirely.

Riot Games has officially announced that Hextech Chests will be returning to League of Legends in the near future, following their controversial removal in the game’s newest season. The launch of Season 15 of the massively popular Riot Games MOBA saw plenty of major changes to the game, both from a gameplay and player progression standpoint. Season 15 introduced the “Feats of Strength” as a major new mechanic for the Noxus-based competitive year, granting powerful rewards to teams that clear set objectives first in a match. However, one of the most controversial changes came outside Summoner’s Rift.

League of Legends would roll out the much-maligned removal of the game’s Hextech Chest system with the start of Season 15. Chests had previously been given out as a reward for Champion Mastery and other in-game incentives, giving players the chance to earn free Skins, Champions, and other cosmetics. The removal of Hextech Chests has seen public outcry from fans, with some more incensed players even calling for a boycott of League of Legends to protest the change. Now, Riot Games is walking back its previous stance on Hextech Chests.

League of Legends is Bringing Back Hextech Chests

Meddler and Pabro spoke more on the reasoning behind Riot Games’ reversal of the removal of Hextech Chests within the video. Pabro cited the player consensus that Hextech Chests are an important part of “making time spent playing League feel more rewarding” for many players. Meddler also expanded upon the change to Chests being included with the battle pass, wanting to make Chests more accessible to a wider range of players. The video also confirmed that the contents of Hextech Chests will not be seeing any significant change, despite the new method of acquisition.

Within the short update video, Meddler and Pabro share several more changes coming to League of Legends with Act 2. Meddler confirmed that Riot will be drastically lowering the price of acquiring champions in League of Legends, cutting the Blue Essence cost in half with Act 2’s launch. Riot will also be returning to its monthly schedule for the popular “Clash” PvP tournaments, confirming the formats for March and April’s tournaments. The suite of changes to League of Legends looks to both entice older players back and make the new player experience easier.
