Before committing to buying Hello Kitty Island Adventure, you may be wondering if it’s worth it or not. We’re here to help you answer this question! While it ultimately depends on you, we’ll help you come to a conclusion by going over reviews, time expenditure, the cost, and some insight from current players.
Review
First and foremost, Hello Kitty Island Adventure is an open-world simulation game set in a tropical destination filled with Sanrio characters. The game is often compared to Animal Crossing: New Horizons due to its location and day-based tasks (such as daily gifts for residents).
While they are compared, Hello Kitty Island Adventure really stands apart from Animal Crossing without feeling too similar. The game provides a lot of content, with a seemingly endless amount of quests for you to complete. The characters on the island also have their own friendship progression and level rewards, allowing you to visualize how close you are becoming with them.
After chatting with your favorite Sanrio characters and completing quests, you’ll also be able to cook a bunch of dishes. There are stations scattered across the map, as well as in some areas that you’ll need to unlock first. This ranges from simple pies to unique mochi and boba recipes. The dishes are all created with items that you can forage for, so gathering doesn’t feel fruitless.
Hello Kitty Island Adventure is great for the Sanrio fan; even if you aren’t familiar with the characters, they are all still unique and charming enough to make an impact.
One main point that is brought up across the internet is the price. If you play on Apple Arcade, you’ll need to pay for the monthly subscription. This can be a good deal if you play other games, but if you are only playing Hello Kitty Island Adventure for the foreseeable future, it may feel like a waste to pay monthly just for one game.
Of course, the other option is to buy it outright, with many not thinking that it’s worth the $40 USD price tag. This is subjective and based on the individual, but you can rest assured knowing that the game does pack in a lot of content. While the beginning may feel a bit slow, Hello Kitty Island Adventure eventually opens up to so much more. This lack of content in the beginning of the game is a valid criticism though; if you want to get started right away, then you may feel a bit disappointed.
Hello Kitty Island Adventure feels meant for the casual gamer who wants to play just a little each day. The PC and Switch version of the game seem to penalize you for time traveling, which may imply that it’s not a ‘grindy’ type of game. This can be a major downside if you want to time travel to get more things done.
Overall, this game is meant to be played a little each day. You most likely won’t be spending a full day running around and completing quests; instead, expect smaller daily sessions.
It’s worth noting that many PC players state the the deluxe version is not worth it. This version doesn’t really have any new/unique features to make it worth the steep price.
Time Expenditure
As a daily, live-service game, there is no real ‘end’, which means you can play as long as you want. If you only have an hour a day to play, then that’s perfect! As long as you are still interested in Hello Kitty Island Adventure, you can keep playing it each day.
Overall, your time expenditure depends on how involved you want to be. We found one Reddit user who racked up over 200 hours in a year, but some only dedicate ten minutes to completing daily tasks.
Cost
Hello Kitty Island Adventure is available on iOS, Steam, and Nintendo Switch. Currently, it’s not available on PlayStation, but this is scheduled to release sometime in 2025.
There are three different prices that you can pay for Hello Kitty Island Adventure. This includes the Apple Arcade version, the regular version, and the Deluxe Edition bundle. You can check out the prices for each below.
Version |
Price (In USD) |
---|---|
Apple Arcade |
$6.99 |
Normal Version |
$39.99 |
Deluxe Edition (this is not available on Apple Arcade) |
$59.99 |
What Is The Deluxe Edition?
The Deluxe Edition costs $20 more than the typical version, but what is it? By paying $59.99 USD, you’ll gain access to three Deluxe bundles (Starter, Crafting, and Events), which unlock after completing a related quest.
Each bundle includes a lot of items. For example, the Deluxe Event Bundle contains hundreds of items from past events. You’ll still need to play a lot in order to unlock this though; it won’t be available at the start of the game.
What Players Are Saying
Delightfully Massive World – Haven Smith
While it gets compared to Animal Crossing, Hello Kitty Island Adventure is very much its own game. It’s cute and fun, with a delightfully massive world to explore both on land and underwater, and there are plenty of quests. It’s a great game for cozy gamers, Hello Kitty fans, and anyone who wants to get into the genre.
Cute, But Pricey – Zoë J. Osik
Don’t get me wrong, I love Hello Kitty and friends, but the price tag is a bit steep for what’s offered upfront. If you have no other live-service games to play and adore the Sanrio cast of characters, then it’s perfect.
Otherwise, you’re stuck with a slow start and a lot of wondering “Did I really spend $60 on the deluxe edition to have to earn my rewards?” It’s not a bad game at all, but the price makes it hard to justify unless you only plan to play this one game for the foreseeable future.
Worth It For Sanrio Fans – Jacqueline Zalace
Hello Kitty Island Adventure is a must for any Sanrio fan. If the price is putting you off though, I really suggest subscribing to Apple Arcade and playing the mobile version for a month or two. The $40 USD price tag can be a lot, especially if you want to play without time-gated content.
Still, Hello Kitty Island Adventure is the perfect cozy game to play for a little each day. I never feel burnt out playing, and I love doing my first run-through of the island each day to give everyone their gifts. Overall, the only downside is the Apple Arcade exclusiveness and the console price. If you plan to play for a long time, then the Deluxe edition may not even be worth it; you can just get those items yourself.
