Mementos are a new way to customize your gameplay experience in Civilization 7 in the form of meta-progression. Each memento you earn over the course of your campaigns can grant you specific boons that’ll help tailor each session to your playstyle, and even help you work toward specific victories. Be sure to check out which mementos you want before starting a new game.

Chart your course to victory in Civilization 7… so long as you know how.
But, with so many different mementos, you might be wondering the best way to unlock them all. Meta-progression always takes time, of course, but we’ve got a comprehensive guide on how to unlock as many mementos as you can quickly in Civilization 7.
How Do Mementos Work?
Mementos are small buffs that you can attach to your leader ahead of playing a campaign of Civilization 7. You can do this during the leader selection process.
Here are a few examples of mementos you can unlock as you play.

Ballestilla |
+1 Sight for Naval Units |
Garuda Statue |
+1 Population to your smallest Settlement every time you get a Celebration. |
Shisa Necklace |
Gain 100 Influence when you become the Suzerain of a City-State. |
Mementos offer a wide range of buffs that aren’t just limited to one aspect of gameplay. They can affect everything from military strategy to your treasury to diplomacy.
How To Use Mementos
Before you can use mementos, you’ll have to unlock memento slots. Luckily, this is pretty straightforward. The only way to unlock these slots is to earn meta-progression through your Foundation Path.
The Foundation Path is a 50-level progression path that you work through by completing Foundation Challenges. Completing each Foundation Challenge in the path earns you XP, which in turn contributes to your Foundation Path.
Here are some examples of Foundation Challenges.
Foundation Challenge |

Exceed Max Settlement Cap by one. |
Similar to mementos, Foundation Challenges cover all aspects of gameplay. A full list of these challenges can be found on your player profile page (found in the top right-hand corner of the main menu).
Before diving into a game, take a look at the full list of Foundation Challenges to see which ones you can try to complete during your session, thus advancing your Foundation Path.
As you work through these challenges, you’ll earn two memento slots, which then allow you to assign mementos to your leader before a campaign.
How To Unlock Mementos Fast
Once you understand how the Foundation Path works, and how to slot in mementos, you’ll be able to start unlocking mementos quickly.
There are two ways to start unlocking mementos, listed below.
- Progress Your Foundation Path – As mentioned, progressing your Foundation Path will earn you mementos as you play.
- Progress Leader Legend Paths – Additionally, each leader has their own Legend Path that can unlock further mementos.
How To Unlock Mementos Through The Foundation Path
There are a lot of mementos available through the Foundation Path, making it an excellent way to unlock mementos. Before each campaign begins, consider two things.
- What Victory Are You Trying To Achieve – Depending on if you’re going for a Cultural, Economic, Military, or Scientific Victory, your strategy for earning mementos may change.
- What Foundation Challenges Work With This Victory – Many Foundation Challenges focus on Wonder construction or militaristic achievements. These can synergize well with the Victory Condition you’re trying to go for.
Another great way to unlock mementos quickly is to specifically go for challenges that have higher XP levels.
How To Unlock Mementos Through Legend Paths
The other main method of unlocking mementos quickly is to complete leader-specific challenges through their Legend Paths. These can all be found in the Challenges sub-tab of the player meta-progression menu.
Many Leader Challenges are also repeatable, and allow you to earn XP multiple times. For example, as Ashoka World-Renouncer, if you complete the Pax Imperatoria path three times, you can earn a total of 100 XP.
If you’re choosing to play as a specific leader in Civilization 7, head to this screen before playing and check out their leader progression challenges.
Because many of these can all be completed in a single campaign, this is the fastest way to unlock mementos overall.
Plus, most of these challenges also involve just achieving certain Legacy Path and Victory Conditions, meaning you can earn XP just by playing to win.
