The Tomb in Black Ops 6 harbors many secrets, from a plethora of side Easter eggs to a grueling main Easter egg quest that will have players completing a myriad of different puzzles. However, with the debut of The Tomb Directed Mode for Season 2 Reloaded, some of the mystery has been broken down into guided objectives for players to follow.
Though Directed Mode helps streamline the Easter egg into digestible on-screen quests, some steps can still be challenging. This is the case with shooting the runes on the outside gateway, a task that will test the player’s memory. Here’s how to shoot the runes on the outside gateway to enter it in The Tomb for Black Ops 6 Zombies.

Shooting the symbols in ascending order can be a rather tricky step for The Tomb in Black Ops 6 Zombies. Luckily, here is a guide to help players out.
How To Shoot 3 Runes On The Floating Rocks In The Dark Aether Sky
Before players can shoot the runes on the outside gateway, they must first shoot three runes on the floating rocks in the Dark Aether sky using the Staff of Ice. To do this, players need to enter the Dark Aether Nexus and look up near the center of the area to find three separate floating rocks, each with a glowing purple rune.
The trick is to shoot each glowing purple symbol with the newly acquired Staff of Ice. Players will know they’ve been successful when the rock attached to the rune begins to descend. Simply repeat this process for all three runes to complete the first step.

How To Shoot The Same Runes On The Outside Gateway To Enter It
Now that players have shot each rune with the Staff of Ice, they will be tasked with shooting the same runes on the outside gateway to enter it. Before leaving the marked rocks, players should take note of the three runes on each one, as they will be needed when reaching the gateway mentioned in the objective.
Once players have taken note of the three runes, they must look around the four Dark Aether Nexus gateways, as one of them will be closed. The closed gateway indicates the location that players must head to next. While those playing Directed Mode can skip this step entirely—since the location will be marked upon exiting the Dark Aether—players in The Tomb’s regular difficulty will need to determine the location on their own.
Here’s a quick breakdown of how to figure out where to go to shoot the same runes on the outside gateway:
- North Gateway is closed: Head to the Dig Site
- East Gateway is closed: Head to the Shrine of the Hierophants
- South Gateway is closed: Head to the Subterranean Temple
- West Gateway is closed: Head to the Ossuary
From here, players can head to the outside gateway’s location based on which gateway is closed in the Dark Aether Nexus. On the other side of the closed gateway, they will find a set of eight runes, three of which will match the ones displayed on the floating rocks back in the Dark Aether.
Using the Staff of Ice, players must shoot the same three runes that appeared on the floating rocks, now located on the gateway. If done correctly, the gateway will open, and the same runes will be displayed on the ground in front of it. However, if the symbols do not appear directly in front of the gateway, players have failed the step. Entering the gateway in this case will cause players to fall, potentially resulting in them being downed.
If the step is completed successfully, stepping through the gateway will transport players to a floating rock in the Dark Aether Nexus, allowing them to progress to the next objective.
