  • The season will likely feature Corlys Velaryon’s ship, as well as the “Battle of the Gullet.”
  • Filming for season 3 may wrap up in September with a potential summer 2026 release date.

As House of the Dragon fans begin to get restless about when they will get to see season three of the HBO show, some promising updates have now swarmed Westeros in new leaked set photos through drone footage, as well as familiar locations that have appeared in both Game of Thrones and the HBO series, not to mention an apparent glimpse of Lord Corlys Velaryon‘s iconic ship, Sea Snake, which he later renamed to “The Queen Who Never Was” in honor of his late wife.

House of the Dragon season 2 has been and gone now, which concluded with ‘The Queen Who Ever Was’ on August 4, 2024, so the wait for season 3 is really heating up. The long-awaited Game of Thrones prequel season two arrived in June last year and was greenlit for a third and fourth season. Based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon focuses on the fall of the House Targaryen as the clan ascends into a huge civil war where families are broken apart by greed and betrayal. Season three will follow on from the epic tale that the House of the Dragon season 2 finale left off, but now, the stakes are even higher as the Targaryen dynasty will continue to reign, by fire and by blood.

Production on House of the Dragon Season 3 is getting that little bit closer now according to recent drone images taken from the show’s set. Even though much of season 3’s plot has been kept well and truly under wraps, the leaked photos offer fans some great updates on where development is currently at and also the hopes that a release window for the anticipated episodes could follow shortly. As shared by @UnBoxPHD on X/Twitter, the images show the House of the Dragon Season 3 set under construction, in what seems to be King’s Landing Red Keep and what looks to be the Weirwood Tree in the courtyard. The set photos suggest that these locations will continue to be a focus when season 3 returns, while also revealing new mysterious areas that fans will get to witness.

Another shot of the House of the Dragon set pans across to a huge boat being built, which, by the looks of it, seems to be Corlys Velaryon’s ship ‘The Queen Who Never Was’. With construction well and truly underway now, these leaked images mirror showrunner’s Ryan Condal comment last year that stated season 3’s production would start in the “first quarter of 2025.” Season 3 of House of the Dragon is also reportedly set to begin with the ‘Battle of the Gullet,’ one of the bloodiest sea battles in Westeros history during the Dance of the Dragons.

If production has indeed commenced for House of the Dragon season 3, this could mean that filming may wrap up around September this year with a summer 2026 release. Thankfully, Game of Thrones fans will have A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to get stuck into before that though, as the spin-off aims to be released sometime in late 2025.
